Your Faith Has Made You Well | Luke 18:31-35

Lords Prayer

Before we begin today’s sermon would you join me in praying the words our Lord taught us to pray?

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done
in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: Amen

Introduction

Please stand for the reading of God’s Word.

Luke 18:31-43 ESV  And taking the twelve, he said to them, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written about the Son of Man by the prophets will be accomplished.  (32)  For he will be delivered over to the Gentiles and will be mocked and shamefully treated and spit upon.  (33)  And after flogging him, they will kill him, and on the third day he will rise.”  (34)  But they understood none of these things. This saying was hidden from them, and they did not grasp what was said.  (35)  As he drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging.  (36)  And hearing a crowd going by, he inquired what this meant.  (37)  They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.”  (38)  And he cried out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”  (39)  And those who were in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”  (40)  And Jesus stopped and commanded him to be brought to him. And when he came near, he asked him,  (41)  “What do you want me to do for you?” He said, “Lord, let me recover my sight.”  (42)  And Jesus said to him, “Recover your sight; your faith has made you well.”  (43)  And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him, glorifying God. And all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.

You may be seated

  • After today’s message we will have only 5 remaining chapters in Luke to cover…
    • So we are now in the final stretch, and fittingly Jesus introduces this final stretch of the Gospel by prophesying, and referencing prophecy, of all that is about to happen to Him.
    • Again, look at verses 31-33 and I will show you what I am talking about.

Luke 18:31-33 ESV  And taking the twelve, he said to them, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written about the Son of Man by the prophets will be accomplished.  (32)  For he will be delivered over to the Gentiles and will be mocked and shamefully treated and spit upon.  (33)  And after flogging him, they will kill him, and on the third day he will rise.”

  • So in verse 31 Jesus references the Old Testament prophets saying all that they had written about Him was about to be accomplished.
    • Then in verses 32 and 33 He summarizes what He means…
      • He says that He is going up to Jerusalem
      • He will be delivered to the Gentiles
      • He will be mocked and insulted
      • They will kill Him
      • The third day He will rise again
        • And what’s cool about this passage of Scripture, other than the obvious prophetic nature of it, is that it actually serves as an outline of the rest of Luke.

We are going up to Jerusalem ( Luke 18:35-19:45).
The Son of Man will be delivered to the Gentiles (Luke 19:47-23:1).
He will be mocked and insulted (Luke 23:1-32).
They will kill Him (Luke 23:33-56).
The third day He will rise again (Luke 24:1-12).

  • So if you want to know the overview of what we are going to talk about for the remainder of Luke, here it is!
    • But what I really like about today’s scriptures is the juxtaposition of Jesus saying “All that is written about me by the prophets will be FULLfilled” and the blind man calling out “Jesus Son of David”.
    • Let’s pray, and then I will tell you what I mean.

  • Today’s message is: Your Faith Has Made You Well.
    • We are going to be talking about Scripture this morning
    • We are going to be talking about Faith this morning
    • And are going to be talking about miracles this morning
      • Can y’all handle that? Ok then let’s get right into it with our first point.

Point One – Understanding Scripture Increases Faith

  • This mornings first point is this: understanding Scripture increases faith.
    • Wait Pastor, how did you get that from this passage?
      • I am so glad you asked, let me show you!

Luke 18:31 ESV  And taking the twelve, he said to them, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written about the Son of Man by the prophets will be accomplished.

Luke 18:38 ESV  And he cried out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”

Luke 18:41-42 ESV  “What do you want me to do for you?” He said, “Lord, let me recover my sight.”  (42)  And Jesus said to him, “Recover your sight; your faith has made you well.”

  • Your Faith has made you well… but what do we know of this man’s faith? Only what we can reasonably conclude from this scripture.
    • This man believes that Jesus can heal Him, so he has faith to believe.
    • This man has faith to confess Jesus as Lord, so we know he has the faith to submit.
    • But tellingly for this point, the man has faith that Jesus is “The son of David”.\
      • This man had faith that Jesus FULLfilled all the prophecies of the Old Testament that specifically called out Jesus as being in the linage of David.
      • 2 Samuel 7:12-13, 2 Samuel 7:16; Isaiah 11:1; Jeremiah 23:5-6; Zechariah 3:8; Ezekiel 37:24 ; Amos 9:11-12; Psalm 89:4-5, Psalm 89:36-37, and Psalm 132:11 are all verses that reference the coming messiah as in the lineage of David… and that’s just to name a few.
    • In fact, there are so many prophecies in the Old Testament naming Christ as the heir of David that even today traditional Jews still use the name Son of David as a title for the messiah!
  • So here we have Jesus saying “All that is written about me by the prophets is about to be fulfilled” and then that is followed by this blind man affirming that Jesus is in fact the Messiah by calling Him the Son of David (a title which Jesus corrects in the following chapter because though His earthly lineage is David, He is not David’s son but David’s Lord).
    • Non-the-less, the blind man has the faith to call Jesus Messiah and that faith came straight from His knowledge of Scripture.
  • Now we I have said this plenty of times before, but I am going to say it again… faith is NOT “just believing”.
    • Faith is not “believing because Grandpa believed”
    • Faith is not “Believing in something because you just feel like it is right”…
      • No, faith is not feeling based at all… that’s what cults teach.
    • Faith is evidential and substantial. Here is the Biblical definition of faith:

Hebrews 11:1 KJV  Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

  • Faith is NOT believing in things not seen, it is having EVIDENCE of things unseen.
    • Faith is not believing in things hoped for, it is having substance of things hoped for.
      • I always use buildings for this example because I think it works really well.
      • I have faith that someone built this building.
      • Why? Because there is a building here!
        • There is evidence that someone built this building.
        • There was at one point a construction crew that came in with tools and equipment and plans and materials, and they worked hard building this building.
        • I didn’t see them do it. I haven’t seen a picture or a video of this building being built… but I have faith that it was indeed built… because I have the evidence of the building itself being here.
        • In the same way I can look at creation and know there must be a creator, I have faith in a creator, not just because, but because there is evidence of Him all around, in the things He created, including us.
      • In the same line, again, Faith is NOT believing and hoping for things… but the SUBSTANCE of things hoped for.
        • I have faith that God answers prayers because we have been praying for a new building and in 90 days, during a financial crises and global pandemic, God raised for us 120,000 dollars for a new building. THAT IS SUBSTANTIAL.
        • That is something physical… God answers prayers with PHYSICAL and SUBSTANTIAL ANSWERS!
          • The blind man can now see, that is SUBSTANCE of things hoped for, he hoped Jesus could heal him and Jesus physically healed him.
          • Therefore I would be that the blind man’s faith was even greater leaving this encounter with Jesus than coming into it! Because he now had MORE substance of things hoped for!
  • But what does that have to do with scripture? What does that have to do with the ancient prophecies? Well without scripture we can’t have faith!

Romans 10:17 KJV  So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

  • You can only have faith in God if you first now God’s word! Because faith comes by hearing and hearing  by the word of God.
    • Sure I might have faith in “A” creator by looking at creation, in fact 93% of the world is religious… only 7 percent are athiests according to a recent study be renowned sociologist Areile Keysar and Juhem Rivera… SEVEN PERCENT are atheist… the rest look at creation and see a creator!
    • But not all see the God of Abraham Isaac and Jacob.
      • Why, because that takes God’s Word.
      • God says  He created the earth the moon and the sun… I can see the beauty of the earth moon and sun, therefore I can have faith from God’s Word that He created it.
  • But pastor! Anyone could make those things up… well, today with the knowledge we have, sure, but the Bible got things right way before science did!
  • Here is a table we share with new believers in their first Bible study, look at what the Bible says verses what Science said when these scriptures where written:

  • This chart should give you FAITH!
    • Because we know have the evidence to prove what God said was true thousands of years ago!
      • Things unseen, we have the evidence for!
  • Now the blind beggar knew His scripture, therefore he had the FAITH to call Jesus the Son of David, He had faith to call Jesus Lord, and He had faith to ask for healing!
    • Because know in front of him is the physical messiah that he had been hoping for, here was the substance of his hope, the substance of all the prophecies written, standing in front of him. THAT WILL GIVE YOU SOME FAITH, AMEN?!

Point Two – Your Faith Can Make You Well.

Luke 18:42-43 ESV  And Jesus said to him, “Recover your sight; your faith has made you well.”  (43)  And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him, glorifying God. And all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.

  • My second point this morning is that your faith can make you well!
    • How many of y’all believe in miracles?! Let me here an amen!
      • I said, how many of y’all believe in miracles?
    • Good! Believing for miracles is good! But guess what?! It doesn’t matter if you believe in miracles if you don’t have FAITH for miracles…

Luke 18:42 ESV  And Jesus said to him, “Recover your sight; your faith has made you well.”

  • YOUR FAITH HAS MADE YOU WELL, Jesus says… YOUR FAITH!
    • Yes believing is part of faith… but not belief without cause… it is belief paired with knowledge… belief paired with Scripture… The scripture says it so I believe it, I see the evidence and the substance of it, therefore I have faith in it!
  • Let me read this verse again in case you missed it, because I am about to beat y’all up and I need you to know it is from scripture, not from me… one more time here:

Romans 10:17 KJV  So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

  • So  don’t tell me you have faith for miracles if you don’t know the scriptures.
    • Don’t tell me you have faith for healing if you don’t read your Bible.
    • Don’t tell me you have faith for provision when you don’t study the Scriptures.
    • Don’t tell me you have faith for a miracle while your Sword is gathering dust on the shelf.
    • Don’t tell me you have faith for a new job when you haven’t opened the New Testament.
    • Don’t tell me you have faith for an old friends salvation when you don’t know a thing about the Old Testament.
    • Don’t tell me you have faith for answered prayers when you don’t read the thousands of prayers written and handed down to us in the breathed out Word of God.
    • Don’t tell me you have the faith to prophecy when you don’t read the words of the prophets.
    • Don’t tell me you have the faith to move a mountain when you can’t even move your but off the couch to pick up and read the words of the Ancient of Days… the King of Kings… the Lord of Lords… the creator of all things… who was and is and is to come… God almighty who wrote His Word down for you and miraculously protected it and handed it down from generation to generation… so you could be able to download it for free on your phone thousands of years latter… WHAT GOOD IS IT IF YOU DON’T READ IT?!
  • If you don’t read it, if you don’t study it, if you don’t listen to it, THEN YOU HAVE NO FAITH.
    • I want you to be healed.
    • I want you to be provided for.
    • I want you to see miracles.
      • I see them all the time, and you can too. BUT IT STARTS RIGHT HERE (Hold up Bible).
        • I hear prosperity preachers… health and wealth preachers… say things all the time “Just have faith”… well that’s good and all, but how do you get faith?
        • Read your bible, study it, obey it, observe its truths play out all around you, read it some more, study it some more, learn it some more, live it some more… and your faith will grow and grow and grow.
    • I once was asked “How do I see miracles like you see in your life? You are given cars right when you need them, you get checks in the mail at the times of emergencies, you are always provided for… how do I see those kinds of miracles?”
      • I told him he needed to give everything to God first…
        • But I wish I would have told him this: Read your bible every day, and do everything it tells you to do and nothing it says not to do.
        • Study it.
        • Apply it.
        • Live it.
        • Breath it.
        • And watch as your faith grows and miracles follow.

Conclusion

Luke 18:8b ESV  …Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

  • this is my advice to you church…
    • Because I want a church filled with people who have great faith.
    • Because I want to be a church that Jesus find’s faith in when He returns.
    • Because I want to be a church where miracles are normal…
    • Here is my advice to you church
      • Read your bible every day,
      • And do everything it tells you to do
      • And do nothing it says not to do.
      • Study it.
      • Apply it.
      • Live it.
      • Breath it.
      • And watch as your faith grows, and miracles follow.
