What are You Afraid of? Luke 12:4-7

Introduction

Luke 12:4-7 ESV  “I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do.  (5)  But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him!  (6)  Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God.  (7)  Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.

  • Look again just at verse 4 for a moment…

Luke 12:4 ESV  “I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do.

  • The first thing that strikes me about this passage is the phrase “My Friends”.
    • Jesus is talking to His disciples, and he wants them to know that what He is about to say is from a place of friendship and love, not out of judgment or rebuke.
    • My friends, he address His disciples, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that hove nothing more they can do to you.
  • Think about the disciples for a moment, think about who Jesus was talking to when He says “Do not fear those who kill the body”
    • He was speaking to Peter of whom Christ said “Upon this Rock I will build my church”
      • Peter was later crucified upside down under Emperor Nero.
    • Jesus was speaking to Andrew, who would later be crucified in Greece for preaching the gospel.
    • Jesus was speaking to Thomas, who was killed by four soldiers who speared him to death. His crime? Loving Jesus.
    • Philip, who was there listening to Christ, would later have a powerful ministry in North Africa. He was executed? Why? Because he converted a Roman governor’s wife to Christianity.
    • Of course Matthew the tax collector was there listen to Jesus, He was stabbed to death in Ethiopia.
    • There was Batholomew who was martyred for the gospel in Suthern Arabia.
    • James was listening to Christ say “fear not those who can only kill the body”… James was stoned and then clubbed to death.
    • Simon the Zealot ministered in Persia and was killed after refusing to sacrifice to the sun god.
    • John was boiled alive in oil because of His faith.
  • Jesus looked at these men and said “do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do.

Bring up Title Slide

  • What are you afraid of?
    • That is the title of todays message and the ultimate question to ask yourself today.
      • Are you afraid of dying?
      • Of failing?
      • Of people not liking you?
      • Are you afraid of torture?
      • Or persecution?
    • I am not talking about heights, I am not talking about bigfoot, what are you REALLY afraid of?
  • You know, speaking of Bigfoot, that brings me right into point one. Fear, because God is Just.

Point One – Fear, Because God is Just

Luke 12:5 ESV  But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him!

  • The year was 2016, the place: Salt Fort State Park, Ohio.
    • Scott Sawyer and I were there for one reason, the annual national Big Foot Convention.
    • This was a big deal, thousands of people from around the nation and even some from other nations flock to this event.
    • Real people who really believe in Bigfoot, passionately.
    • Now this was a particularly epic conference because they had two HUGE keynote speakers.
      • The first was a biologist with two PHD’s.
        • A PHD in Animal hair Identification.
          • In fact he is world renowned and police from around the world hire him for his skills in odd cases involving animals.
        • The second is in Great Apes. Most people who believe in Big Foot  believe that he is a great ape.
        • This guy is literally the most qualified to speak about bigfoot.
      • So this professor comes up and spends two hours explaining how bigfoot in fact does not exist and why it is next to impossible that he does or ever did.
        • People were angry, and confused, people were crying… people had given there life to finding bigfoot, and here this man comes all the way from Canada to say “Nope, he doesn’t exist”.
      • The once thriving conference, now silent… thousands staring dumbfounded at the stage…
      • BUT WAIT! There is still hope, the SECOND KEY NOTE SPEAKER. BOB GIMLIN.

SHOW TITLE SLIDE AGAIN

  • I chose this photo for the title slide for two reasons, one because Bigfoot is kind of creepy, but two because of Bob Gimlin. You see that supposed bigfoot there, he was looking, at this moment, right in the face of Bob Gimlin.
    • THAT’S RIGHT, the second keynote speaker was there when the first bigfoot was ever caught on film! THERE IS AN AIR OF HOPE IN THE ROOM AS BOB COMES UP TO SPEAK.
    • Thousands of people, many of whom idolize Bob, are now on the edge of there seats.
  • Bob gets up to the podium, and begins his hour long presentation…
    • An hour long presentation to a room full of believers who JUST HAD THEIR DREAMS CRUSHED. Who are looking to him to redeem their faith in Big Foot!
  • Bob begins:
    • On that day in 1976 I saw something. I don’t know what it was. I have many doubts. But I saw something. I am just uncertain. But let me tell you what I am certain of! JESUS CHRIST IS REAL, I KNOW HIM, AND HE WANT’S TO KNOW YOU!
      • Bob spent the whole hour talking to the room about Jesus.
      • He shared the gospel, he shared his testimony.
      • He answered questions at the end:
        • But did you see a bigfoot? “I don’t know, I honestly don’t. But dear, it is much more important that you know Jesus”
        • “How did bigfoot change your life?” “He didn’t, but Jesus did!”
    • It was amazing, Scott and I were blown away. Here was a hostile crowd looking to back Bob, but Bob took the opportunity not to appease them, but to share Christ with them.
  • Bob was not afraid of the crowd.
  • Why do I share that story? Two reasons, one because I think it is really fun, but two because it testifies of what Bob Gimlin’s life is about. His life, everyone thought, was supposed to be about Bigfoot. But it wasn’t it was about Jesus.
    • And because His life was about Jesus, nothing was going to stop him from sharing Jesus.
  • What’s your life about? Is it about Jesus? Then what is stopping you from sharing Him? Fear?
    • DON’T FEAR MAN! FEAR GOD!

Psalms 112:1 ESV  Praise the LORD! Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who greatly delights in his commandments!

Psalms 31:19 ESV  Oh, how abundant is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you and worked for those who take refuge in you, in the sight of the children of mankind!

Deuteronomy 6:24 ESV  And the LORD commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as we are this day.

Luke 1:50 ESV  And His mercy is for those who fear Him from generation to generation.

  • But remember… Jesus is talking to His friends!

Luke 12:4-5 ESV  “I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do.  (5)  But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him!

  • The disciples aren’t afraid of Christ for their own sake, the fear Him for the sake of those who don’t know Him.
    • You ever consider that the people at your Job who don’t know Jesus are destined for hell fire?
    • The family members you have who are not born again, they are facing eternal damnation…
    • The cashier at Caseys might be thrown into the lake of fire…
    • The people you pass on the sidewalk
    • The person who cut you off on the free way
    • The kids who are being to loud in the movie…
  • It is a FEARFUL THING to realize that EVERYONE who does not know Christ is destined for hell.
  • THIS IS THE FEAR THAT JESUS IS TALKING ABOUT!

Luke 12:5 ESV  But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him!

  • You see Bob Gimlin was afraid that the thousands of people listening to him didn’t know Jesus. And that fear drove him to preach the Gospel!
  • SO MY QUESTION: What are YOU afraid of?
    • Are you more afraid of losing your job or your friends because of your faith…
      • Or are you more afraid of your coworkers and friends not knowing Jesus?!
    • Are you more afraid of offending your family members than you are of them burning?
  • What are you afraid of?!
  • That brings us to point two this morning… fear not, because you have value.

Point Two – Fear Not, Because You Have Value

Luke 12:6-7 ESV  Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God.  (7)  Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.

  • Jesus starts by saying “Fear God” then He goes on to say “Fear Not”.
    • What He is saying is this: Fear for those who don’t know Christ, but don’t fear for yourself because God’s got you, you are worth protecting.
  • You have value. Each individual person who is born again is valuable, Jesus paid a whole lot for you didn’t He?
    • Each of you has value so great to God.
  • And I want to show you something so cool, if you are feeling worthless today, if you are feeling like an outcast today, let’s stop the fear talk for a second and find some encouragement.
  • In this verse we see that 5 sparrows are sold for 2 pennies… but check this out in Matthew:

Matthew 10:29 ESV  Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father.

  • So Matthew says two sparrows are sold for a penny, and Luke says how many do you get for 2 pennies?

Luke 12:6-7 ESV  Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God.  (7)  Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.

  • Five, that’s a good deal, if you buy 4 you get one for free!
    • Now check this out, God says even that 5th sparrow… the free sparrow… the add on sparrow that has no commercial value… it’s just an after thought, just a little extra…
    • That free sparrow, even that one, God cares about.
  • There is no one in the Kingdom that God sees as worthless, church, and if you are His child, you have so much more worth than any of these sparrows, and God isn’t going to let you go to waste… fear not!
  •  Of the 12 original disciples 10 were killed for their faith.
    • One killed himself after betraying Jesus (He should have feared God!)
    • And then there was John…
      • Remember I said John was boiled alive? If you listened carefully you would have noticed I never said that he died from being boiled alive.
        • In fact, he emerged from the boiling oil unharmed.
        • He was then banished to the island of Patmos, and it is there that God gave him the vision of Revelation.
        • God wasn’t done with Him so He protected Him from the boiling oil!
    • God wasn’t done with David so he protected him from Goliath, then from Saul, then from his own son Absoloam!
    • God wasn’t done with Elijah so He protected him from Jezibell.
    • God wasn’t done with Moses so He protected him from the Egyptians.
    • God wasn’t done with Shadrack, Mishack, and Abednigo. So he protected them from the flames.
    • God wasn’t done with Daniel so He protected him from the lions.
    • God wasn’t done with Joseph, so He protected him from his own brothers.
  • Listen church: If God is not done with you then He is not going to let you die, He won’t let you starve to death, He wont curse you. WHAT ARE YOU AFRAID OF?
    • Do you think God will curse you or bless you for sharing the love of Christ at work?
    • Do you think He will curse you or bless you for sharing the truth of Christ to your friends?
    • Do you think He will curse you or bless you for standing up for Christ to your family?
    • What are you afraid of?
  • Some people think it’s not fair that Moses didn’t get to see the promised land!
    • God took Him right before the people took the land…
    • HOW MEAN OF GOD! Now Moses has to live in heaven for eternity!
    • Seriously, what are you afraid of? That you are going to die and go to heaven? THAT’S THE BEST CASE SCENARIO!
    • GOD’S GOT YOU!

Conclusion

  • Gospel call
  • Courage and boldness prayer.

Joshua 1:9 ESV  Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

If we don’t figure this out now, what are we going to do when the gun is to our head, or the machete to our throats?
