    • I think you know the words…
  • This little light of mine:
    • I’m Gonna let it shine!
  • Come on, This little light of mine:
    • I’m Gonna let it shine
  • This little light of mine…
    • I’m gonna let it shine…
  • Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine!
  • Hide it under a bushel?
    • NO! I’m gonna let it shine…
  • I love that song, because it is both evangelistic and scriptural in nature. It teaches a scriptural truth, one which we are going to talk about today, while encouraging evangilsim.
    • But… church, the song is lacking… because it doesn’t actually ever tell us how, how exactly are we supposed to let our light shine… what does that mean… can you give me some practical advise here song?

Bring Up Title Slide

  • This light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine… but how? That’s what we are going to talk about today.
    • The song may be lacking, but the scripture is not! Let’s take a look at Luke 11:33-36

Luke 11:33-36 ESV  “No one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar or under a basket, but on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light.  (34)  Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but when it is bad, your body is full of darkness.  (35)  Therefore be careful lest the light in you be darkness.  (36)  If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly bright, as when a lamp with its rays gives you light.”

Point One – Let Your Light Shine

Luke 11:33 ESV  “No one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar or under a basket, but on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light.

  • The Mormon faith is one that is very strong for those who believe.
    • Very few Mormons fall away from Mormonism because of strong family units, strong beliefs, and a culture that shames and disowns those who chose to leave the LDS church.
    • Rarer still is for an ex-Mormon to then come to faith in the Jesus Christ of the Bible.
    • That is, for an ex-Mormon to be born again and to become a true Christian.
      • It’s rare, but it happens. God is patient wanting all to come to repentance, amen?
    • That’s why the testimony of my old roommate is so inspiring.
    • My old roommate grew up Mormon. His whole family was Mormon, mom, dad, siblings, aunts and uncles…
    • They were all strong in the faith.
      • But as my roommate grew up, he started questioning the faith, and as he did he was scorned and shunned… told never to question… told just to believe…
    • In the end that mindset pushed him away.
      • He forsake the church of Latter Day Saints and forsook all religion altogether.
    • I didn’t know him during that time.
    • When I meet him he was an on-fire born again believer living for Jesus, going to school at a Christian university, and helping lead worship on our church’s worship team.
    • When I found out that he used to be a Mormon, I had to ask Him how he became a born again Christian…
      • He responded with a name, Janice.
    • OH! I thought… Janice must have been some hottie Christian girl, so he converted to date her… right?
      • NOPE! Janice was a little old lady secretary at his work.
    • Well, she must of have been some evangelist! What did she say to convince you to follow Jesus?
      • Nothing really.
    • Huh, dude, tell me what happened.
      • Well, every day for years I would come to work and Janice would be nice to me.
      • She was always happy and full of joy.
      • I don’t think I ever once heard her complain.
      • No matter what was going on, she just seemed content with life.
      • I don’t know, she just was always… bright… and I liked being around her…
      • One day, after years of this, I finally asked her “What is your secret? Why are you always content? Why are you always at peace, and full of joy?”
      • She responded with one word: “Jesus”
      • She didn’t need to convince me, her life had done all the convincing, I knew then and there I need to find Jesus like Janice knew Jesus.
  • This little light of mine…
  • But what IS the light that Janice was shining? I mean yes the light is Jesus, but what does that look like?
    • For Janice it was peace, contentment, joy… it was never complaining no matter what.

John 16:33 ESV  I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

Philippians 4:11-13 ESV  Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.  (12)  I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.  (13)  I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

Romans 15:13 ESV  May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

Philippians 2:14 NKJV  Do all things without complaining and disputing,

  • You see Janice’s life produced these things naturally, and it was so unusual in a world full of sin, corruption, anger, greed, anxiety, and stress… it was so unusual that my roommate HAD to ask about it… it was so unusual that it lead to my roommate’s salvation.
  • Now when someone’s life naturally produce’s something, we call that product fruit, and what a Christian ought to produce is Christian fruit.
    • Really what letting your light shine means is “Live a life that produces good, Christian, Fruit”.
    • And praise God He tells us what Christian fruit is…

Galatians 5:22-25 ESV  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,  (23)  gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.  (24)  And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.  (25)  If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.

  • You see it is the flesh that desires to complain… it is the flesh that desires to be anxious… it is the flesh that bears stress and anger and angst…
    • If you want to see a great example of what the flesh looks like, come watch me during a church softball game!
      • I am working on it, church…
  • But the Spirit… the Spirit desires peace, and patience, Kindness and Goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control.
    • It is the Spirit that is bright, it is these fruit that shine in a Christian’s life.
  • Praise God that Janice let her light shine.
    • Praise God that Jesus let His light shine… preaching and teaching not in secret, but in public… not in a basement, but on a hill…
    • And living a life full of the fruit of the Spirit, even as they nailed Him to a cross.

Point Two – Let Your Light Be True

  • Now point two this morning is very important… this is the big part of the “How” that is sometimes missed in Christianity.
    • Without a proper understanding of point two, point one is easily missed.
  • Point two… Let Your Light Be True
    • Let me explain…
      • Hold up bright green sheet of paper.
    • What color is this paper? Green, BRIGHT GREEN.
    • It’s pretty bright, isn’t it?
      • BUT what if I turned off all the lights, blacked out the windows and made it pitch black in here… then would you consider this paper bright? No, it would be just as dark as everything else in the room.
      • It’s brightness is an illusion, it is not really a source of light at all.
    • *Turn on cell phone flash light*
    • Now this is a real light… in this bright room you can still see the light, but you may not describe it as very bright…
    • But again if I turned off all the lights and blacked out the windows, if I made it pitch black in here… if we waited for our eyes to struggle to adjust… and then I turned on this flash light, MAN WOULD IT BE BRIGHT.
  • So many Christians, in this dark world we live in, are like this green sheet of paper… they put on an appearance of brightness… they put on an appearance of having the fruit of the Spirit.
    • They put on a fake face, a false smile, they ACT like everything is ok.
    • But the darker things get, the clearer and clearer it becomes that it is all an act.
  • You see Janice was not green sheet of paper, she was a true light.
    • And the darker things got for my old roommate, the brighter her light shown.
    • My old roommate grew up surrounded by people faking it, and they were GOOD at it too.
      • But he knew true light when he saw it.
  • But how? HOW PASTOR? HOW DO WE HAVE TRUE LIGHT?
    • The answer is in the scripture… open your eyes, let the light in… don’t blind yourself with the darkness of the world.

  • Your eyes must be healthy to let light in.
    • If your eyes become diseased things start to go dark.
    • If the disease gets worse you might go blind.
    • AND IF YOU ARE TOTALLY BLIND IT DOESN’T MATTER HOW BRIGHT THAT LIGHT MAY BE, IT WILL NOT GET IN.
  • Dear Christians in this church… To Let your Light Shine You must First Be full of Light.
    • The Light of Christ Enters through your spiritual eyes.
    • DO NOT LET YOUR EYES BECOME DISEASED BY SIN, LEST YOU BECOME BLIND TO THE LIGHT.
    • BECAUSE IF YOU ARE BLIND TO THE LIGHT THEN YOU CAN NOT BE FILLED WITH LIGHT AND IF YOU ARE NOT FILLED WITH LIGHT THEN YOU WILL HAVE NO LIGHT TO SHINE.
  • Listen, Listen, LISTEN! a lamp is only bright if there is FIRE inside of it.
    • And that fire is JESUS!
  • If you are a Christian than you are a lamp of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
    • And that lamp produces light… that light is hope… that light is the fruit of the Spirit.
    • If you missed it, here it is again, here is the light your lamp should be producing by the fire of Christ.

Galatians 5:22-23 ESV  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,  (23)  gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

  • If your life is not producing these things, ok… let’s address that, let’s fix that…
    • But please please please don’t be a green sheet of paper.
    • We have enough litter in the church, we don’t need any more paper…
  • In fact, for the rest of this service… let’s just address this…
