The Things That Belong to God | Luke 20:20-26

The Things That Belong to God | Luke 20:20-26

Lords Prayer

Before we begin today’s sermon would you join me in praying the words our Lord taught us to pray?

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done
in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: Amen

Please stand for the reading of God’s Word.

Luke 20:20-26 ESV  (20)  So they watched him and sent spies, who pretended to be sincere, that they might catch him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the authority and jurisdiction of the governor.  (21)  So they asked him, “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach rightly, and show no partiality, but truly teach the way of God.  (22)  Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or not?”  (23)  But he perceived their craftiness, and said to them,  (24)  “Show me a denarius. Whose likeness and inscription does it have?” They said, “Caesar’s.”  (25)  He said to them, “Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”  (26)  And they were not able in the presence of the people to catch him in what he said, but marveling at his answer they became silent.

You may be seated

  • Today I want to talk about three things… what belongs to Caesar, that is, what belongs to the government, what belongs to God, and what belongs to the World.
    • Because it is my firm opinion, particularly based on the scripture that we just read, that we as Christians ought to give to the Government that which is the Governments, give to the world that which is the worlds, and give to Christ that which is Christ’s.

Show Title Slide

  • Spoiler alert! We are going to spend the majority of this sermon talking about the things that belong to God!
    • Someone say “The Lord has need of it”
      • Y’all remember that sermon, well this sermon is going to add the practical to that spiritual concept, we are going to talk about the specific things that belong to God and why we should be giving them to Him.
        • But first, let’s talk about the things that belong to Caesar… and even before that we are going to pray, amen?!

Pray Pray Pray Pray Pray Pray Pray Pray Pray Pray Pray

Point One – What Belongs to Caesar (The Government)

Luke 20:25 ESV  He said to them, “Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

  • Let’s start by talking about what belongs to Caesar… in other words, what belongs to our government…
    • Because that’s what Jesus is talking about when He says “Give to Caesar that which is Ceaser’s”… or maybe you have heard this verse in the KJV, which it is famously quoted in… “Render unto Caesar the things which be Caesar’s”.
    • Really what Jesus is talking about, in a very literal sense is “Give to the government that which is the government’s”.
      • Because some think to themselves “This is my money, I am not giving it to the government!”
      • While others think “This is God’s money, I am not giving it to the government!”
    • And the Pharisees, knowing that Christ represented a Kingdom not of Rome, not even of this earth, wanted to catch Jesus in a trap.
      • So when they asked Jesus weather or not to pay taxes they thought that he would either say “No, this is God’s money” and that would give the Romans a reason to arrest Jesus.
      • Or, they reckoned, that He would say “Yes, pay your taxes” which they thought would anger Jesus’ followers or at the very list cause them to question His divinity.
      • Of course Jesus wasn’t tricked, Jesus is a pro… and He said “Who’s face is on this coin?”
        • Of course they answered Caesar’s
      • So He said, well then give it to Caesar, but the things of God, give to God.
  • So what actually belongs to the government?

Your taxes

  • Obviously the first thing that belongs to the government is your taxes.
    • There are some Christian’s who erroneously believe that they do not need to pay taxes, they say “Everything I have is God’s, therefore I can’t give this to the government”.
    • You know where such Christians are right now? IN PRISON!
      • Not for the Gospel’s sake, but for money’s sake…
        • Who’s picture is on our money? Dead president’s… please don’t go to prison for the sake of a few dead president’s church.
  • Listen, I know our government is FAR from perfect… but it wasn’t any worse than Caesar’s government and Jesus told them to pay tax’s then, we are without excuse.
  • Pretty straight forward so far…
  • Here is where it get’s sticky… Here is where some toes might get crunched…
    • Y’all Ready.
  • The second thing you owe your government… the second thing that belongs to the government and we should give it is this…:

Your Respect

  • Yup, your respect.
    • Regardless of who wins on Tuesday…
    • The Bible says we should give the government our respect.
    • Let’s read the first 7 verses of Roman’s 13

Romans 13:1-7 ESV  Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.  (2)  Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.  (3)  For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval,  (4)  for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer.  (5)  Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God’s wrath but also for the sake of conscience.  (6)  For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing.  (7)  Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.

  • Now there is always a lot of confusion and discussion about these verses. So I will try to make this simple…
    • Our government is evil.
      • It does a lot of evil things, including but not limited to: Supporting the killing of millions of unborn babies, forming and enforcing unjust laws that are sometimes racist, classes, or other forms of bias, promoting and defending horrendous sinful lifestyles, and of course, passing and enforcing laws at local, state, and national levels that directly persecute the church.
    • Yes, our government is evil, make no mistake about it.
    • But it is NOT as evil as the government of Rome when this passage of Scripture was written.
      • When this was written the Roman government did all of those things…
        • And they also rounded up Christians to burn them alive at the stake.
        • They put Christians in arenas full of thousands of people so that the people could watch and be entertained by hungry dogs or lions eating the Christians alive.
        • They did everything they could to crush the gospel and kill those who followed it.
          • And it was in that environment, that these word’s from Paul were penned…
    • Respect and honor your government and leaders. God allowed them to be there for a reason.
      • That is what Paul teaches us. And we see him LIVE this!
        • He never argued with or insulted anyone in government, even when the arrested him time and time again.
        • He always respected and honored them!
  • NOW HEAR ME CHURCH. Respect and Honor does not always mean blind obedience!
    • It was illegal for Paul to preach the Gospel, yet he preached.
    • It was illegal for Paul to worship and praise God, yet he worshiped!
    • It was illegal for churches to gather, but they gathered.
    • They all did their best to keep their heads down, but when they would be discovered they did not fight it, they took their punishment with respect and dignity, preaching the Gospel the whole way through.
  • Respect and honor your government, but do not obey any law that hinders you from doing what God commands you to do. God’s law comes first!
    • So wear a mask when you go shopping.
    • But when you come to church, this is His time, so we Worship him without requiring masks.
    • Keep your social distance…
    • But we will not limit the number of people who can come to worship God.
    • And should the government try to shut us down, we will keep having church until the police come.
      • Then we will respectfully disagree with them until they leave or arrest us.
      • It’s that simple.
  • But before we move on to point two, I want to really stress this. IT IS YOUR BIBLICAL DUTY TO HONOR AND RESPECT YOUR ELECTED OFFICIALS.
    • If Biden is elected and I have the chance to talk to him, I will honor him. I will shake his hand. I will pray for him. And if I get a chance, I will respectfully inform him that biblically speaking he is a baby murderer, and I will urge him to come to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ.
      • I can do all of that without cussing him out or spitting on him or whatever.
    • It’s not a huge secret that I am not a huge fan of President trumps demeanor and lifestyle.
      • I am a huge fan that he is pro-choice and pro capitalism… but man this president sometimes says things and does things that irk me!
      • But I am not going to call him names, I am going to respect him and honor him.
        • And if I had the chance I would shake his hand, pray for him, and respectfully urge him to maybe tone down the twitter account. =D
  • Now, that brings us to point two… what belongs to God.

Point Two – What Belongs to God

Luke 20:25 ESV  He said to them, “Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

  • So we know what belongs to Caesar, our respect and our taxes… but what belongs to God?

Your Tithes and Offerings

  • Let’s just get this one out of the way, yes, your tithes and offerings BELONG to God. You don’t owe God your tithes and offerings, because they are already His. You don’t pay God your tithes and offerings, because you are not buying anything with them. YOU BRING GOD HIS MONEY THAT ALREADY BELONGS TO HIM.

Malachi 3:8 ESV  Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, ‘How have we robbed you?’ In your tithes and contributions.

  • When you don’t bring God your tithes and offerings, the Bible says you are Robbing Him. It is the same as breaking into the church and stealing things, or taking money out of the offering as Sunday.
    • Why? Because it is God’s money, your job is to bring it to Him.
    • The bankers don’t get to decide not to give you all of your withdraw, do they?
      • Just because they have the money in their possession does not make it theirs.
    • Guys who drive armored trucks don’t get to drive the truck home and spend the money do they? Just because they have it in their possession?
      • No, because the money is not theirs. Their job is to bring the money to the bank.
    • And our Job is to bring our tithes and offerings to the storehouse, which is a local church.

Malachi 3:10 ESV  Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.

Your Loyalty

  • What else belongs to God? Your loyalty!
    • Your loyalty belongs to no one else other than your spouse, which you are one flesh with, and the church.
    • I respect America, but my Loyalty is in Christ alone.
    • I am grateful to be an American and am grateful for all the veterans who have served to make this country great, but this country is not my God, nor is it my permeant home. I am loyal to Christ.

Matthew 26:35 ESV  Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!” And all the disciples said the same.

  • I am not willing to die for anything, not a political agenda, not a nation… only Christ, His Church, and My Family there in, or maybe even to die that some might know Christ.
    • Peter said “I will die before I deny you”… But you know what, Peter was wrong! He was more loyal to his flesh, which was afraid of death, than he was to His Lord. And he denied Christ three times.
    • Want to know if you are loyal to Christ or not, take a self assessment:
      • Have I ever missed church, an opportunity to worship God, fellowship with believers, and grow in His Word… have I ever missed church for an entirely selfish reason? Then you showed your loyalty in that moment.
      • Have I ever chosen something selfish when I knew I should be reading my Bible and spending time in prayer (I have!). Then I showed who I was loyal to in that moment.
      • Do you ever try to hide your faith because you don’t want to have an uncomfortable conversation (I Have)! Then you have shown who you are loyal to in that moment.
    • Polycarp, an elderly pastor in Ancient Samaria, was arrested for his faith. He was told by the local governor “Deny Christ and live, or we can burn you at the steak. The chose is yours”.
      • He responded “86 years I have served Christ and He has never turned His back on me. How then now in my hour of most need should I turn my back on Him, my King and Savior”. THAT’S LOYALITY THAT PETER THOUGHT HE HAD.

Your Children

  • Your children ought to belong to God! What parent would wish hell on their child?

Proverbs 22:6 ESV  Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.

  • Never believe this nonsense that you should let your child Chose to their own religion, or chose his own way… WHAT?!
    • I don’t let Ezra chose whether or not he will learn how to read.
    • I don’t let Hannah chose weather or not she is going to learn how to count.
    • So then if Christ is real, and He is… then this is not just a religious book, 1 of many religions, this is a History book. This is a social studies book. This is a home Ec Book. THIS IS TRUTH. And the others are lies. And I will teach my children that!

Your Time

  • Give your time to God! It belongs to Him.

Ephesians 5:15-16 ESV  Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise,  (16)  making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.

  • Do you know why your still have time on this earth, and God didn’t just kill us at the first sin of our sin? Because He is patient.
    • Give your time to God and let Him be the center of your Schedule.

Your Worship

  • Your praise and worship belong to God and no one else, I hope this goes without saying…

Acts 12:21-23 ESV  On an appointed day Herod put on his royal robes, took his seat upon the throne, and delivered an oration to them.  (22)  And the people were shouting, “The voice of a god, and not of a man!”  (23)  Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him down, because he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and breathed his last.

Your Service

  • Your service belongs to God an no one else.
    • I am not talking about work, ok, you work to earn money… and hopefully you do that as unto the Lord…
    • But I am talking about what you do to help people outside of work.
    • Your service belongs to God.

Matthew 6:24 ESV  “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

  • Serve God! Not the boy scouts, or Habitat for Humanity, or Doctors without borders or whatever… SERVE GOD.
    • Houses for the homeless are good, and we should house the homeless… but to what end? That they are housed but still die and go to hell one day?
      • No! We should be doing to preach the Gospel that they might have a home AND have an eternity with Christ.
      • SERVE GOD!

Your Mind

  • Your mind, church, ought to belong to God! Give it to Him.

2 Corinthians 10:5 ESV  We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,

  • What is your mind focused on? Do you take every thought captive to obey Christ… in other words, is every thought you have holy?
    • Or if people saw into your head would they be appalled at what they found.
    • Listen, the mind is a tricking thing… and I have NO stones to throw… but just like you have to make an effort to bring your tithes and offerings… just like you have to make an effort to serve God… you have to make an effort to Give God your mind.
    • If you struggle with this, find a brother or sister in Christ and ask for help!
    • Confession and accountability brings those dark thoughts into light and allows you to start taking them captive.

  • I want to conclude with one final thing that belongs to God… your life.
    • Gospel call
  • Now, when I started this sermon I said I wanted to talk about three things:
    • What belongs to Caesar
    • What belongs to God
    • And what belongs to the world.
  • You will notice that we are at the end of this sermon and I haven’t talked about what belongs to the world… so lets talk about it…
    • What belongs to the world? NOTHING! Not a thing! Nothing you have belongs to the world. It ALL belongs to God!
    • The world is the ENEMY!
    • They hate us.
    • They hate our way of life.
    • Our job is not to mingle with the world, but to loath the world while loving those in it enough to help bring them to Christ.
    • If you still have parts of your life that are wordly, don’t take a nap until you kill those things off.
      • Cancel the subscription.
      • Text your worldly friends and say no more bar hopping.
      • Throw some things out.
      • Do some cleaning of your spiritual house until nothing is left but you, God, and some taxes left over for Caesar, amen?!
