Something Greater is Here!

Introduction

Luke 11:29-32 ESV  When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, “This generation is an evil generation. It seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.  (30)  For as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be to this generation.  (31)  The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.  (32)  The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.

  • Imagine a time and place where the majority of a nation claims to follow God.
    • They study the Bible, they go to church, they name their kids Biblical names.
    • A nation with extremely high literacy rates, brilliant minds, top notch schools…
    • Yet a nation filthy with the stench of sin, tangled by the snares of pride, and littered with gossip, hatred, sexual immorality, and divorce.
    • A nation that had the very things of God at it’s fingertips… yet chose time and time again the things of this world.
    • A nation… a generation that rejects Jesus as Christ.
  • What nation are you imagining?
    • What I was defining was the Jewish generation in the nation of Rome whom Christ preached too.
    • Of course I was also describing our own generation, the nation of America.
  • You see we are not all that different from the Jews in Rome whom Jesus was talking to…
    • The generation whom Jesus called an Evil generation in verse 29…

Luke 11:29 ESV  When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, “This generation is an evil generation. It seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.

  • Now those are some harsh words Jesus! Why would you call that generation evil?
    • Well, because they all knew the Word of God…
      • But that wasn’t enough for them…
    • They all attended weekly church services…
      • But that wasn’t enough for them…
    • They all raised there Children in biblical traditions…
      • But that wasn’t enough for them…
    • AND NOW THEY HAVE GOD IN THE FLESH STANDING IN FRONT OF THEM
      • And that’s not enough for them… they want MORE! A SIGN, A WORD FROM HEAVEN, SOMETHING OTHER THAN JESUS… THEY WANTED MORE!
  • Are we that different as a nation church?
    • The United States has more Christian Churches per capita than any other nation in the world… yet we have the 4th highest abortion rate… nearly 2 out of every 100 babies born is murdered here.
    • We have more Christians that any nation in the world…
      • Yet we have the third highest divorce rate in the world… only beat by Belarus and Maldives
      • Not great for a religion that tots forgiveness as one of it’s main principles.
    • Church, Charismanews just came out with a report that 80% of unmarried Evangelical Young Adults are having sex…
  • We live in a nation where people go to church Sunday morning, then Sunday night they watch the Bachelor where young girls try to deflower a virgin.
    • That’s not good TV, church, that’s sin!
  • If Jesus was here today, I bet that most of the people in America who claim to be Christians would turn against Him, they would demand a sign from Him, they would crucify Him afresh.
    • Why do I think that… because that’s what we do as a nation every day. JESUS IS HERE CHURCH! HE IS ALIVE… WE HAVE TO STOP ACTING LIKE HE STAYED IN THAT TOMB!

BRING UP TITLE SLIDE

  • Something greater is here, right now, in this place, in our presence… HIS NAME IS JESUS!
    • If you are looking for a sign, if you are looking for a miracle… maybe you have missed that it has been here the whole time…
    • That sign has a name… that miracle has a name… His name is JESUS! And He is calling out to you this morning!
  • Something Greater is here, let’s give Him praise this morning, let’s give Him honor this morning, let’s accept all He has to offer this morning!

Point One – The Greatest Wisdom is at our Fingertips

Luke 11:31 ESV  The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.

  • If you don’t know the history being this statement Jesus is making, let me fill you in..
    • King Solomon was the third King of Israel…
    • Remember David, who killed Goliath, yeah he was the second King of Israel and his son Solomon would become the third king of Israel.
    • Now one night God appeared to King Solomon in a dream and look what God offers…

1 Kings 3:5 ESV  At Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night, and God said, “Ask what I shall give you.”

  • God says “Ask whatever you want and I will give it to you!”
    • WHAT AN OFFER!
  • So, Solomon gives God praise, he humbles himself, then he asks…

1 Kings 3:9 ESV  Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?”

  • Solomon could have asked for anything, but he asks for wisdom… for discernment….
    • He doesn’t ask for wealth, he doesn’t ask for power, he doesn’t ask for a long life… he asks for wisdom.
  • So God gives Solomon wisdom… makes him the wisest man who would ever live.
    • With this wisdom Solomon becomes the arguably most successful king of Israel, and by some accounts, he may even have been the richest man to ever live.
  • In comes the queen of the south, who Jesus references… She is a gentile queen but she is smart enough to know that King Solomon had his stuff together…
    • So she traveled to Israel with amazing gifts to present to King Solomon just so she could hear his wisdom…
    • A POWERFUL QUEEN GIVES HER WEALTH AWAY TO SOLOMON JUST TO HEAR HIS WISDOM, THAT’S HOW WISE SOLOMON WAS!
  • Now, back to Luke…

Luke 11:31 ESV  The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.

  • The queen of the south, Jesus says, the queen of Sheba, if she was here, she would judge you for your stupidity! SHE DID EVERYTHING SHE COULD TO HEAR THE WISDOM OF SOLOMON… and yet something greater that Solomon is here and you don’t believe it!
    • THE GREATEST WISDOM, INFINIT ETERAL WISDOM IS HERE! And you want a sign? Are you kidding me?!
    • “I am right here!” Jesus is saying “If I am not enough for you, nothing will be!”
  • Church this is what I want you to hear…
    • Solomon was wise!
      • The Queen of Sheba was wise to seek his wisdom…
    • But Jesus is wiser!
      • And Jesus offers His wisdom to you! Are you listening to it? Are you seeking it out? Do you trust it?

Proverbs 12:15 ESV The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.

James 1:5 ESV If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

Proverbs 2:6 ESV For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding;

Colossians 3:16 ESV Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

  • When you don’t know what to do, consult the Word of God.
  • When you don’t know what to say, turn to God’s Word.
  • When everything seems lost, trust in His Word!
  • I know so many Christians who just float on by in life… until things get bad… and when things get bad they cry out “GOD HELP ME! SEND ME A SIGN! SHOW ME THE WAY!”
    • And God says… why is it that what I have given you is not enough.
    • God has given you so much wisdom in His word… are you reading it?
    • Are you listening to it?
    • Are you allowing it to minister to you?
    • Are you obeying it?
    • Are you letting it soak into your being?!
    • I promise you, whatever situation you are in, not matter how difficult or complex… the answer to all of your problems is in here… I have never faced an issue, or helped someone through an issue that the wisdom of scripture did not address somewhere between Genesis and Revelation. IT IS ALIVE CHURCH!
    • OH WHAT THE QUEEN OF THE SOUTH WOULD DO TO HAVE THIS BOOK!
      • And so many of us are sleeping on it, we are ignoring it.
  • When all is said and done, let this be said of the people of CLC… that we listened to the Word of God… we didn’t just read it, we didn’t just study it, but we followed it.

Point Two – The Greatest Preaching is Readily Available

  • Give me an Amen if you love some good preaching!
    • I love me some good preaching! That’s why I listen to myself a lot! (I’m just kidding) but I definitely have some favorite preachers… Pastor Matt Krachunis from Faith and Victory, Pastor Daniel Ong from International Christian Center, Dr. Ravi Zacharias that dude spits fire… Paul Washer, Charles Spurgeon, Jonathan Edwards… all of these guy’s bring straight heat to the pulpit… I LOVE GOOD PREACHING! And I hope you do too!
  • And I want you to know that the greatest preaching EVER is readily available to you…
  • Now I want to tell you the difference between preaching and teaching… because there is a large difference…
    • The primary goal of teaching is to inform the audience.
      • A teacher wants to make the audience smarter, more educated.
    • The primary goal of preaching is to bring change to the audience.
      • A preacher wants to make the audience holier, more like Christ.
    • Again, a teacher’s goal is to inform. A preachers goal is to bring change.
  • So when I preach sermons I have two goals in mind, first and foremost my goal is to honor God with every word that comes out of my mouth….
    • My second goal is to help everyone in this church leave this place looking a little bit more like Christ then what they looked like when they came in.
      • I want us all to be more like Christ, that is my Goal.
      • Education… that’s on the side… I mean I like to teach… but man, if you know everything there is to know but you don’t make a change in your life then you have just become a pharisee and I have failed you as your preacher an pastor.
  • So again, the goal of preaching is to bring change to the person or audience listening…

Luke 11:32 ESV  The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.

  • Nineveh was a wicked and evil city, so wicked that God was going to destroy them with fire and brimstone, just like He did with Sodom and Gomorrah.
    • But God gave them one last chance by sending them this preacher, Jonah…
    • I am going to read to you the entirety of Jonah’s sermon to the Ninevites…

Jonah 3:3-5 ESV  So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days’ journey in breadth.  (4)  Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s journey. And he called out, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!”  (5)  And the people of Nineveh believed God. They called for a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them.

  • His sermon was literally 8 words… “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!”
    • That’s it, 8 words! According to most standards his sermon was TERRIBLE!!!
      • (Some of you are like “I wish your sermons were 8 words” settle down, you’ll be fin)
  • The power in Jonah’s sermon was not what was said, but what the reaction was… the whole city repented, they changed, they were saved!
    • The goal of a preacher is not to say a bunch of awesome stuff, it is to bring change… and Jonah did it with EIGHT WORDS! WITH EIGHT WORDS HE BROUGHT CHANGE AND REPENTANCE TO A WHOLE CITY!
    • JONAH WAS A GREAT PREACHER!
  • AND THERE IS SOMETHING GREATER THAN JONAH AVALIBLE TO US!
    • The best preacher ever is available to us…
    • And His name isn’t Christian, or Matt, or Daniel, or Ravi…
      • HIS NAME IS JESUS!!!!!!
      • And His sermons are all right here, available to us, ready to bring change in our lives.
  • Let me hear an amen if you need some change in your life…
    • Come on, let me hear an amen if you need some change in your life…
  • If you didn’t say Amen then I am going to assume that is because you are perfectly like Jesus…
    • But not me… I still have some growing to do… I need some change… I want to be more like Jesus…
    • SO I NEED SOME GOOD PREACHING!
    • And I find it every morning when I open my Bible.
  • This isn’t a beat you up kind of sermon this is a change from glory to glory kind of sermon!

2 Corinthians 3:18 ESV  And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

  • Church if you are saved then you are GLORIOUS! Let the Word of God change you from Glory to Glory! For ever increasing glory! From one degree of glory to another, amen!
  • And if you are not saved we are going to fix that right now…
