Remember Lot’s Wife! Luke 17:31-37

Introduction

Please Stand for the Reading of God’s Word

Luke 17:31-37 ESV  On that day, let the one who is on the housetop, with his goods in the house, not come down to take them away, and likewise let the one who is in the field not turn back.  (32)  Remember Lot’s wife.  (33)  Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will keep it.  (34)  I tell you, in that night there will be two in one bed. One will be taken and the other left.  (35)  There will be two women grinding together. One will be taken and the other left.”  (37)  And they said to him, “Where, Lord?” He said to them, “Where the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.”

You May Be Seated

  • As we continue in Luke we continue to study Jesus’ teaching on His second coming.
    • If you are new to CLC, what we do here is preach through books of the Bible, we take our time going line by line, verse by verse, preaching on whatever topic is presented that day.
    • We started the book of Luke 2 years ago, and today we happen to be talking about the second coming.
    • Remember, church, that this teaching is on the heels of what Jesus told the Pharisees, the false believers, and the disciples, the true believers.
      • The false believers asked Jesus “When will the Kingdom of God come?” and to the false believers He told them “Don’t you get it? The kingdom of God is here in your midst!”
      • But to the true believers Jesus said “The kingdom of God is coming when I come back to earth like a Flash of Lightning.”
      • What we learned was that the Kingdom of God is here in earth, but it is not complete, it is not as it is in heaven.
      • In heaven the Kingdom of God is complete, perfect, without sin or darkness… every corner of heaven is God’s Kingdom.
      • When Jesus came the first time, some 2000 years ago, he begain to bring the Kingdom of God here to earth.
      • To every person who gives their life to Christ, turns from their sin and confesses Him as Lord… they become Born again, and they become a part of the Kingdom of God.
        • So the Kingdom of God is on earth in part, but there is still sin, and sorrow, and darkness on earth.
        • There are still parts of earth that are not a part of God’s dominion… and our job until Jesus comes back is to go and make disciples, in other words, go and spread the Kingdom of God one soul at a time.
      • But know this church… the Kingdom of God will come to earth in completion, it will come with the sound of a trump from the Eastern Sky, Jesus will come back and when He does He will Judge the earth and cleanse the earth from all unrighteousness, bringing the full Kingdom of God to earth!
      • This is our blessed assurance, the reason we can cry Maranatha! Lord Come Quickly, because Christ is coming to perfect the world, to bring His full Kingdom!
    • So last week we spoke about the world’s ignorance to sin, and even the lukewarm church’s ignorance to sin… especially in our own nation, and how that IGNORANCE and APATHY is more of a sign of the second coming of Christ then the actual sin is.
    • Today we are going to talk about what to do in light of that information and how to respond if we see the Wrath of God poured out on our Nation.
  • With that wiehgty intro, let’s pray!

Pray Pray Pray Pray Pray Pray Pray Pray Pray Pray Pray Pray Pray

Point One – Drop Everything and Follow Christ

Luke 17:31  On that day, let the one who is on the housetop, with his goods in the house, not come down to take them away, and likewise let the one who is in the field not turn back.

  • Church, if Christ is real… if this is all true… if ETERNITY is at stake… then this point should be very easy to swallow… if you truly believe… if you KNOW the truth… this point should really not have to be said…
  • DROP EVERYTHING AND FOLLOW CHRIST.

Matthew 16:24 ESV  Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

1 Peter 2:21 ESV  For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.

Luke 9:23 ESV  And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

Matthew 10:38 ESV  And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.

  • And back to our key passage from today is this verse:

Luke 17:33 ESV  Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will keep it.

  • If you try to hold onto your pre Christ life…
    • If you try to hold on to who you were before you came to Christ…
    • You will lose everything!
    • As a pastor we see it all the time, people who come to Christ, they get a taste of His redemption… but they want to hold on to their old life, the old them… they want the blessings of Christ, they want His saving grace… but they also want their sin, and their lusts, and their old ways…
      • They always fall away… they are proven to be what Jesus would call weedy soil… their sin chokes them out like weeds choke out a plant.
  • But if Jesus really died for us so that we can live for Him for eternity… then should it really be that much of a stretch to leave everything behind to follow Him.
  • Listen, Church, JESUS IS COMING BACK! I don’t know when, but it is going to happen, what will He find you doing when He comes back.
    • I will tell you what He won’t find me doing…
      • He won’t find me drinking and partying with my old friends who reject Christ… I left them behind a long time ago.
      • He won’t find me rocking out to secular music… I left secular music behind a long time ago… I couldn’t tell you the name of a current pop song, even though I used to LOVE secular rap music, I can’t name a single secular rap song from this decade… because I left that filth behind.
      • He won’t find me watching adult videos… even though I used to be addicted to that filth, I fought and fought for Christ’s righteousness to break that addiction because it was sin!
      • He won’t find me on TikTok! I apologize for mentioning it in a positive light last week, I was on it for a few days and enjoyed it… until TikTok started shoving sexualized content down my throat without me asking… so what did I do? I uninstalled it! Because no matter how much I like making those videos on TikTok, it’s not worth the price of sin that TikTok is asking me to pay! Amen?!
    • Here is a serious question… what in your life… what do you do… that you would be horrified to be doing when Jesus comes back? What would you be horrified for Him to find you doing… whatever that is… GET RID OF IT! LEAVE IT BEHIND.
  • And let’s be practical… do one thing at a time… what’s the most sinful, non-christ like thing about your life… start there.
    • Maybe you need to quit drinking, or smoking, or getting high…
    • Maybe you need to stop lying, or gossiping, or bickering…
    • Maybe you need to stop stealing things online like movies or music…
    • Maybe you need to fix what you listen to or watch for entertainment…
    • Pick on thing, and fight to rid yourself of it… if you are addicted, find help and accountability… once free, find the next thing… and leave that behind…
    • Keep doing this daily for the rest of your life… it’s what Christ means when He tells us to die to ourselves… to daily take up our cross…
  • Going back to our verses in Luke…

Luke 17:31 ESV  On that day, let the one who is on the housetop, with his goods in the house, not come down to take them away, and likewise let the one who is in the field not turn back.

  • Jesus here is talking about the wrath of God being poured out like in the days of Noah or the days of Lot…
    • When this happens, Jesus says leave EVERYTHING BEHIND and get out of there!
      • I promise you this will be a lot easier if you have lived a life of sacrificing for Christ… when Christ is your EVERYTHING… leaving anything else behind is easy…
      • But when you try to hold on to the thing God hates… don’t be surprised if you get caught in the crossfire.
  • That brings me to point two… Remember Lot’s Wife, Don’t Look Back!

Point Two – Remember Lot’s Wife, Don’t Look Back

Luke 17:32  Remember Lot’s wife.

  • Some call this Jesus’ shortest sermon… very simply “Remember Lot’s wife”…
    • Lot’s wife is known for one thing… Looking back.
  • God decided that He was going to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah because of the incredibly amount of sin in their town… but in His Grace, He decided to spare Lot, his wife and daughters, because Lot had Some semblance of righteousness…
    • God said “Grab your stuff and go, and don’t look back!”
    • So Lot and his family left Sodom and Gomorrah…
    • But something inside of Lot’s wife longed for her old city, for her old life… she looked back.

Genesis 19:23-26 ESV  The sun had risen on the earth when Lot came to Zoar.  (24)  Then the LORD rained on Sodom and Gomorrah sulfur and fire from the LORD out of heaven.  (25)  And he overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground.  (26)  But Lot’s wife, behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

  • Dear Christian, the quickest way to destroy your life is to look back and long for the sin of your past…
    • And I get it… some sin goes deep… but you HAVE to leave it behind… you cant let it come back…
  • Listen to this passage of scripture very closely… listen to the words… in fact, get your bible out, pull up the Bible app and go to second Peter 2:20

2 Peter 2:20-22 ESV  For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first.  (21)  For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them.  (22)  What the true proverb says has happened to them: “The dog returns to its own vomit, and the sow, after washing herself, returns to wallow in the mire.”

  • NEVER RETURN TO YOUR SIN! NEVER RETURN TO YOUR OWN VOMIT! THIS PASSAGE SAYS THAT IF YOU WILL THAT YOU WILL BE WORSE OFF THEN IF YOU WERE NEVER SAVED AT ALL!
  • JESUS ISN’T JOKING AROUND WHEN HE SAID REMEMBER LOTS WIFE…
    • Look we have some 60 people here this morning… more watching online… what if everyone of us actually lived this…
    • You know what would happen, 10 years from now the 60 of you would be teachers, and preachers, and prophets, and evangilists…
    • The church would explode because we would have 60 people serving Christ daily leaving everything behind.
    • Our children would be serving, their children would be serving, Christs Kingdom would be Established like NEVER BEFORE in Cedar Rapids…
    • If we could just take this advice seriously… REMBER LOT’S WIFE!
    • I BELIEVE WE CAN BE THAT CHURCH WITH CHRIST’S HELP!

Conclusion

  • I want to conclude by talking about the last three verses in Luke 17

Luke 17:34-37 ESV  I tell you, in that night there will be two in one bed. One will be taken and the other left.  (35)  There will be two women grinding together. One will be taken and the other left.”  (37)  And they said to him, “Where, Lord?” He said to them, “Where the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.”

  • First, let me be clear, I do not believe that this is talking about the rapture… why? Well, verse 37 says “Where, Lord” and Jesus responds “Where the corpse is, there the vultures will gather” yeah, that’s not talking about heaven…
  • But second, Jesus talking to His disciples is telling them to flee the wrath of God… the subject here is the coming WRATH and JUDGMENT of a very just and patient God…
    • Here, instead, Jesus is saying that the wrath of God will come and consume the wicked in the World… we will talk much more about that when we go through revelation.
    • But I want to urge you, if you are not a Christian, if you are not saved, if you are not born again… don’t wait, don’t leave this place without knowing Christ Jesus, God in the flesh, as savior.
    • He could come back tonight, and you don’t want to be in a state of sin when He comes back with judgment…
