Mission Sunday: Equal Passion | Matthew 28:18-20

· Today is mission Sunday, we do this three times a year to remind ourselves of some very important truths… truths like these:

o There is more to Christianity than Christian Life Church.

o God created and loves more than just Cedar Rapids.

o Iowa is not the center of the universe, no matter what the media says during election time.

o The United States is not God’s only concern.

o There are people all over the world, from different nations, backgrounds, cultures, and languages whom God loves, whom God died for, whom God is calling, and for whom God is sending missionaries to preach the Gospel.

· This Sunday I want you to get pumped up for missions!

o I want you, for one Sunday, to not worry about yourself, your own spirituality, what you need from God, how you need whatever…

o This Sunday put that all aside and think “What can I do to seek and save the lost?”

Matthew 28:18-20 ESV And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. (19) Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (20) teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

· Jesus says “I have been given all authority in heaven and earth, every ounce of authority ever is mine! I have it all! And what do I command with that authority? What do I say? I take all that authority and I say GO!

o GO!

o GO!

· But where are we to go?

· And what are we to do?

· And what should we teach our disciples?

o All the things Jesus taught us!

· And how long shall we do this?

o Until the end of the age! Until I come back, and behold, I am with you always! Jesus responds!

· Pastor Paul Washer says this regarding this great commission:

o Missions is not a complicated thing…

o You are all called to be involved in the great commission… every one of you.

o With equal passion!

o Whether you stay here, or go into the darkest jungles of Indonesia

§ You are called to embrace the great commission with equal passion! Every one of you.

You may be seated.

· You see I have meet a lot of missionaries who are crazy passionate about the great commission.

o As they should be, they have given there lives to that commission, to that command from God, they have left it all behind.

o Yes the missionaries are passionate about the great commission…

· But I find that FEW church goers are that passionate.

o And I get it, when you are not on the field there are so many distractions in life…

§ What school to send your kids to.

§ What career path to follow.

§ What house to buy.

§ What job to take.

§ What doctor to see.

§ What woman to marry.

§ What gifts to send your grandkids.

§ What show to binge next on Netflix.

o We get so distracted with life here in Iowa that we forget that there are billions of people who don’t know Jesus around the world.

o Many of whom have never even heard his name.

· Now pastor Amanda and I, our goal with CLC, as God has given it to us, is not just to raise up an awesome church in Cedar Rapids filled with love and fellowship and new and old believers alike.

o We have done that. But that is not our goal, that is simply a stepping stone toward our goal.

· Our goal is to raise up a church where everyone involved is just as passionate about the great commission as the missionary in the middle of Pakistan preaching the truth of Jesus.

o To be just as passionate as the missionaries risking their lives in North Korea.

o To be just as passionate as the saints who are being killed for their faith in parts of Africa.

· Because after all Jesus used all of His authority to say this: GO TO ALL NATIONS.

Point One – How will they hear if no one is sent?

Romans 10:13-15 ESV For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (14) How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? (15) And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”

· According to the Joshua project there are 126,730,000 people living in Japan,

SHOW Target-japan.png

o Of those 123,979,000 have never heard the Gospel or have no access to a Christian church that preaches the gospel in their own language, that’s 97.8% of the population.

§ Church this is a first world country that has a constitution that legally guarantees freedom of religion.

· We are not talking about Pakistan, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan or North Korea which all have very similar numbers…

· In those places you could be killed or arrested for being a Christian.

· In Japan the government will PROTECT you and your rights to be a Christian.

· We are not talking about a place that is hard to get into, or hard to live in.

o Japan is one of the closest ally’s of the United States! You can fly there with your US passport today and get a visa in their airport!

o We have military bases on almost every island!

· Most people in Japan know at least some English and the youth in Japan are flocking to English classes to learn it.

· Listen to me y’all, the only thing keeping the church out of Japan is… the church!

· If you are a Christian, if you are born again this morning, it is because someone loved you enough to share the gospel with you.

o Maybe it was your family who raised you in the gospel.

o Maybe you heard It for the first time in this church or another church that someone invited you to…

o Maybe an evangelist shared the good news with you…

o But at some point someone shared the gospel with you.

o And once you got saved, born again, you are blessed to live in a country were you can immediately find a church to go worship in, to grow in, to be discipled in.

§ Therefore you ought to be PASIONATE about sharing the gospel and planting churches!

· We are targeting Japan because there are not enough people sharing the gospel there and there are not enough churches to grow in, fellowship in, and worship there.

o If you are born again you ought to be passionate about target japan… and any other mission work that this church or any other church or ministry does… because it changes eternity! Amen?!

· Good, that brings me to point two this morning…

Point Two – The Battle Is Fought on Many Fronts

2 Peter 3:9 ESV The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

· Point two this morning is that the Battle is Fought on Many Fronts!

· I know I quote 2nd Peter 3:9 a lot, but it is such a good verse!

o God is not willing for any to perish, but for all to come to repentance.

o God doesn’t want ANYONE to go to hell, but he wants Everyone to go to heaven.

· You know some people say that God doesn’t care about numbers… those people are WRONG!

· This verse makes it very clear that God DOES care about numbers, because that ALL is a number.

o That all is the 126.8 million people in Japan, God wants all 126.8 million people in Japan to come to repentance. Therefore, we are working to plant a church in Japan.

o That all includes all 2.9 million people in Jamaica, therefore we support Pastor Musa and Victory Family Centre in Kingston Jamaica.

o That all includes all the 7.6 million people in Sierra Leone, therefore we support Kingdom Life and Prayer Ministries international in Sussex, Sierra Leone.

o That all includes the 16.91 million people in Guetamala, therefore we support Impacto Ministries.

o That all includes all includes the at least 5 million women, men, boys, and girls who are sex trafficked every year around the world… therefore we support Chains interrupted.

o That all includes the 133,000 people in Cedar Rapids, therefore we have a church here, we have life groups that do outreach, and we support the Living Room Ministries.

2 Peter 3:9 ESV The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

· Church, we need to have an EQUAL PASSION for ALL the people of the world.

o This church exists because there was people passionate about YOU all the way over in Singapore.

o The people of Victory family Center Singapore gave money to send a team to Cedar Rapids Iowa because Jesus said “Go to all nations”. And America is part of All nations.

· If CLC has blessed you… rather, if God has blessed you through CLC, then you have been blessed by the passionate Christians of Singapore who are passionate about that word ALL.

· Church as Christians we have different callings, we have different giftings, we are all different members of one body… but all of us should be equally passionate about winning the lost the world over.

o Whether you are a general or a private in the Lord’s army, you should be passionate about winning the war!

o No general wants to give orders to unpassionate soldiers and no soldier wants to follow an unpassionate general.
