It’s Time to Talk About the End – Part 1 | Luke 21:5-38

Lords Prayer

Before we begin today’s sermon would you join me in praying the words our Lord taught us to pray?

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done
in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: Amen

Introduction

Please stand for the reading of God’s Word.

Luke 21:5-20 ESV  And while some were speaking of the temple, how it was adorned with noble stones and offerings, he said,  (6)  “As for these things that you see, the days will come when there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”  (7)  And they asked him, “Teacher, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?”  (8)  And he said, “See that you are not led astray. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and, ‘The time is at hand!’ Do not go after them.  (9)  And when you hear of wars and tumults, do not be terrified, for these things must first take place, but the end will not be at once.”  (10)  Then he said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.  (11)  There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven.  (12)  But before all this they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my name’s sake.  (13)  This will be your opportunity to bear witness.  (14)  Settle it therefore in your minds not to meditate beforehand how to answer,  (15)  for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict.  (16)  You will be delivered up even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and some of you they will put to death.  (17)  You will be hated by all for my name’s sake.  (18)  But not a hair of your head will perish.  (19)  By your endurance you will gain your lives.  (20)

  • What we just read is a perfect example of what I call “Pre-Written History”. Another word for it is “Prophecy”.
    • Prophecy is always 100% accurate, therefore it is simply history that has not yet happened. So we ought to think of Biblical Prophecy as pre-written history.
    • Jesus, here, is not giving some hard to understand, deep and mysterious prophecy that needs to be interpreted by Bible scholars and years of study, metaphor, or symbolism.
    • He is simply giving a History lesson.
      • Listen, how many of you remember September 11th? Or, JFK’s assignation, or the moon landing…
        • When you tell your kids about it you talk about where you were, how it felt, what it was like watching the events unfold…
        • You don’t use mysterious language or hard to understand metaphors… you simply say what happened.
      • Y’all know what I am talking about…
    • As real as 9-11 was for you, all those memories… THAT’S as real as prophecy is for Jesus!
    • It’s not hard for Him to explain it, He simply says what happens, it’s pre-written history.
    • I want you to remember this for this sermon and when we dive into the book of Revelation…
      • If we can demystify what prophecy is, then it is a lot easier for us to consume, and study and understand.
      • Prophecy is simply Pre-Written History.
  • So this morning we are going to talk about this historical outline of what Jesus was telling people was to come…

  • It’s time to talk about the End.
    • Specifically the end of the world as we know it… and what that means for us here and now. PLEASE TAKE NOTES!

Point One – Don’t Listen to End Time Prophecies that Are Not in the Bible

Luke 21:5-6 ESV  And while some were speaking of the temple, how it was adorned with noble stones and offerings, he said,  (6)  “As for these things that you see, the days will come when there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”

  • Oh humans… we never change…
    • You remember last weeks sermon, remember how it ended?
      • Jesus used the example of the widow giving her last few dollars to explain that GOD DOESN’T  NEED OUR MONEY! He want’s our sacrifice…
      • Therefore, Jesus points out the widow gave more then those who gave huge monetary gifts… because she gave all she had…
    • Now look at that… right after Jesus shares that, the people start talking about the jewels adorning the temple… why?
      • Because they were disagreeing with Jesus… THEY WANT THE BIG GIFTS TO MEAN MORE!
      • So they start saying things like “BUT THE TEMPLE HAS SO MUCH WEALTH! LOOK AT THE GEMS AND THE GOLD! THAT STUFF WAS EXPENSIVE! HOW COULD JESUS SAY THE WIDDOW GAVE MORE? YOU CAN’T DECORATE THE TEMPLE WITH TINY OFFERINGS LIKE THAT.
    • And with that Jesus launches into talking about the end times, starting by saying that flashy temple would be destroyed… it’s not eternal.

Luke 21:7-8 ESV  And they asked him, “Teacher, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?”  (8)  And he said, “See that you are not led astray. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and, ‘The time is at hand!’ Do not go after them.

  • DO NOT GO AFTER THEM!
    • Someone say DO NOT GO AFTER THEM!
  • As your pastor, church, one of my jobs is to protect you from going astray… so I need you to hear this… DO NOT LISTEN TO END TIME PROPHECIES THAT ARE NOT IN THE BIBLE!
    • The only end time prophecy that you need is in this book.
      • Now don’t get me wrong, God still speaks… God still uses prophecy and those gifted in the prophetic…
    • But when it comes to End-Time Prophecy listen to Jesus! DO NOT GO AFTER END TIME PROPHETS!
      • DO NOT FOLLOW THEM.
      • DO NOT LISTEN.
      • STAY AWAY!
      • Let me read it again so that you don’t miss it.

Luke 21:8 ESV  And he said, “See that you are not led astray. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and, ‘The time is at hand!’ Do not go after them.

  • Ever since Jesus said this, people have been prophesying saying “the end is near”. They have all been wrong.
    • In the past 10 years I have seen prophecies come and go.
      • Books about blood moons
      • Prophecies about fires in Australia.
      • Locust in Egypt.
      • Even president Trump being prophesied as “The Trump of the Lord”.
      • Before that it was prophesied that Obama was the anit-christ. And Obama means this that and the other thing in Hebrew.
    • Don’t go after them…
  • Even though many of them are well intentioned, and some a given by mighty men and women of God… it doesn’t matter… DON’T GO AFTER THEM!
    • It is a distraction.
    • It is a false-witness.
    • It is disheartening.
    • It brings God no glory!
  • Don’t Go After Them!

Matthew 24:42-44 ESV  Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.  (43)  But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into.  (44)  Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

  • What then? Can we not know at least a general idea of when Jesus is coming?
    • Well we certainly can discern the season of the end, but we need to only look to Scripture to do the discerning.
      • We are going to talk more about this later in this sermon, and we will talk a lot more about it when we go through revelation…
      • But for now, let’s talk about where we are for SURE in Jesus’ prophecy.

Point Two – “Before All This” You Are Here.

Luke 21:9-12 ESV  And when you hear of wars and tumults, do not be terrified, for these things must first take place, but the end will not be at once.”  (10)  Then he said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.

  • You know there is a Facebook meme going around with charts or graphs or timelines that say “you are here”.
    • This is where you are, church, this is where humanity is… we are in the “Before all this”.

Make a slide that is exactly the same as the Luke21:9-12 slide but with an arrow and the words YOU ARE HERE in red pointing to the start of verse 12. Ask Pastor Christian if you need help.

  • The “before all this” period started right around the death and resurrection of Christ Jesus, and this period will end when the world as we know it ends and is recreated in perfection.
  • So the good news is, we don’t need an extra book or prophecy to know how we are supposed to behave…
    • Jesus tells us in plan and clear words right here…
  • We live in a time when people will persecute us, arrest us, even bring us before kings and governors and politicians to be judged.
    • And this has been True since the time of Jesus!
    • Don’t think that Biden is going to bring in an age of persecution of the church… because there has always been persecution of the church.
      • It might be worse under Biden, but it’s not new.
      • You understand, don’t you, that AMERICA exists because this verse is true…
      • It is because of the Kings persecution of Christians that pilgrims risked their life to start a new nation!
  • So church, don’t be surprised when persecution comes!

2 Timothy 3:12 ESV  Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,

  • But that’s ok, don’t fear it! Rejoice in it! Why? Because God uses persecution for the good of the persecutor and the persecuted.

1 Peter 4:12-14 ESV  Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.  (13)  But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.  (14)  If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you.

Matthew 5:10 ESV  “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  • So the Bible says that those persecuted for Christ are blessed! And there are dozens of verses about this…
  • But not only that, check this out in our verse from Luke…

Luke 21:13 ESV  This will be your opportunity to bear witness.

  • When you are persecuted, this is your opportunity to witness! That is a blessing that you give, by faith, the those who are persecuting you!
  • And we see this true throughout scripture and history.
    • Paul used his persecution to testify before governors and Kings.
    • And should I be arrested for sharing the gospel then I will rejoice for I will get to share the gospel with a judge, an officer, and my cell mates!

And this has happened to me already! I was summoned to a federal court room because we had the AUDACITY to invite a Sex-Offender to diner and to church. We didn’t even know he was a sex offender, it was just a man that we were loving in Christ’s love… none the less we had federal agents come into our house the next morning, guns on hips badges on chest, and they threaten to take away our kids because of it. I went to federal court and was put on the stand because of it… and I shared the Gospel more powerfully then I think I ever have!

  •  “Well that’s great for you pastor, but I am not a preacher, what happens if I get arrested?”
  • I got you fam! Because Jesus tells us exactly what to do… and that is “DON’T WORRY ABOUT IT!”

Luke 21:14-15 ESV  Settle it therefore in your minds not to meditate beforehand how to answer,  (15)  for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict.

  • You may get arrested in America for being a Christian, in fact I think it is likely.
    • And Scripture says “Don’t worry about it, the Holy Spirit will give you the words to say when you need to say it”.
    • It really is that simple.
      • When I was in college, in Seattle, I was taken Poli-Sci from an atheist professor.
      • He had us write sermons about the Patriot Act.
        • So I did, from a Christian World View.
      • He gave me an F, 0% with an email that said “It’s obvious that you have been brainwashed by your church”.
      • I asked if I could speak with him and he agreed.
        • I don’t remember a word from that meeting, it is almost like I blacked out, the Holy Spirit took over and spoke through me with wisdom and grace and truth.
        • God did exactly what He said He would do for me.
      • And He will for you too.
  • So don’t be surprised when the next four verses come true:

Luke 21:16-19 ESV  You will be delivered up even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and some of you they will put to death.  (17)  You will be hated by all for my name’s sake.  (18)  But not a hair of your head will perish.  (19)  By your endurance you will gain your lives.

  • This happens all around the world, and it will likely happen here, and that’s ok church, because God win’s, amen?!

Conclusion

Alright, we are going to end here for the day, because this is too much to go through in 1 message, promise to come next week, amen?!
