It’s Holy, or it Ain’t | Luke 19:41-48

Lords Prayer

Before we begin today’s sermon would you join me in praying the words our Lord taught us to pray?

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done
in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: Amen

Introduction

Please stand for the reading of God’s Word.

Luke 19:41-48 ESV  And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it,  (42)  saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.  (43)  For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side  (44)  and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”  (45)  And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold,  (46)  saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a den of robbers.”  (47)  And he was teaching daily in the temple. The chief priests and the scribes and the principal men of the people were seeking to destroy him,  (48)  but they did not find anything they could do, for all the people were hanging on his words.

You may be seated

  • You know there are so many sermons I could preach from this passage.
    • I could probably spend a year or so in just these 7 verses, preaching and teaching on them and their implications… But as I sat down to write, and I started to pick them apart, and read line by line, I felt… well I felt like I was missing it.
    • Have you ever heard the phrase “You can’t see the forest for the trees”?… it means you are so focused on the details that you miss the overall meaning…
    • You are so focused on each individual tree that you don’t see the massive beautiful forest….
    • And that is how I was feeling about this section of scripture… I was focusing on each individual detail…
      • Jesus weeps over Jerusalem… that will preach!
      • You don’t know that things that make for peace! Man that will preach.
      • You enemies will surround you, they will destroy you, they won’t leave one stone upon another… boy oh boy could I preach how sin is our enemy and will destroy us in exactly that way!
      • And what about Jesus going into the temple… grabbing a whip and driving the merchants out? That’s got to be a series in and of itself…
      • BUT THEN I SAW THE FOREST… and what a beut she is!

BRING UP TITLE SLIDE

  • It’s either Holy, or it Ain’t!
    • It is either holy and perfect and righteous
    • Or it is sinful and flawed and doomed
    • There is no in-between, there is no such thing as almost holy, there is no kind of holy, there is no mostly holy…
    • It’s either holy or it ain’t!
      • Jeruselam is supposed to be Holy, but it wasn’t…
      • The temple was supposed to be Holy, but it wasn’t…
      • And now the only human on earth who could truly claim to be Holy by His own accord is entering His city, and the temple that was supposed to be His…
      • And there is a meeting of water and oil.
      • Of fire and ice.
      • Of Holy and Sinful.
      • And it wasn’t pretty…. Let’s pray.

Pray Pray Pray Pray Pray Pray Pray Pray Pray Pray Pray Pray Pray Pray

Point One – Holiness and Sinfulness Cannot mix.

Luke 19:41-42 ESV  And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it,  (42)  saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.

  • Oh Jerusalem, if you knew the things that made for peace… Jesus says, weeping over Jerusalem.

Matthew 5:9 ESV  “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

  • Here Jesus comes into Jerusalem that is supposed to be a holy city filled with a holy people.
    • A people who are supposed to be after God’s own heart…
    • A people who would even call themselves sons and daughters of God.
      • But for them to be called sons and daughters, they would have to be peacemakers…
      • But according to Jesus they don’t know the things that make for peace… why? Because they have taken what is supposed to be holy and tried to mix it with the sinful desires and passions of man!
    • The writer of Hebrews puts peace and holiness in the same breath…

Hebrews 12:14 ESV  Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.

  • But pastor, weren’t the people of Jerusalem kind of Holy?
    • I mean the practiced the feasts, they gave at the temple, they visited the Synagogue every week…
    • NO NO NO NO! You can’t be kind of Holy.
  • What we need to understand church, is what the Word Holy actually means.
    • The word holy does not mean “Religious”… because you can be kind of religious.
    • And it doesn’t mean “Good”… because you can be kind of good…
    • The Hebrew word for Holy qodesh, which means “set apart, sacred, totally separate”.
  • It means “Here is sin over here, and all things tainted by sin” and over here, completely separate from sin, here is what is holy.
    • These two can not mix, they can not join together, thy can not describe the same thing, they can not take up the same space. Something is either completely holy, or it isn’t.
  • Maybe you have heard the phrase:
    • Eat the meat, spit out the bones…
    • “Well brother, you know, it’s just like when you are eating chicken… you just eat the meat and spit out the bones…”
      • I know that Game of Thrones has some bad stuff in it… but you know, just eat the meat and spit out the bones.
      • I know that the Netflix movie cuties sexualizes children, but the moral of the story is so good… you just have to eat the meat and spit out the bones…
      • I know there is sin in what we are doing, but good comes from it… you got to eat the meat and spit out the bones…
    • WHAT?! NO! That may work for chicken but it doesn’t work for holiness.

Romans 3:8 ESV  And why not do evil that good may come?—as some people slanderously charge us with saying. Their condemnation is just.

  • Paul makes it very clear, there is no way in which a Christian ought to do evil in order that good might come. That is slanderous and worthy of condemnation.
    • There is no “eat the meat and spit out the bones” when it comes to holiness…
      • That may work for chicken, but it doesn’t work for holiness.
        • Why? Because bones are almost food… you can eat them, actually… I had a friend who ate chicken bones, just crunched em right up…
      • That’s why there is nothing wrong with serving bone in chicken…
      • But you would never serve lemonade with urine in it? Would you?
        • Just drink the lemonade and spit out the pee…
      • You would never serve brownies with a little bit of rat poo in it…
        • Just eat the chocolate and spit out the poop.
      • And you certainly wouldn’t serve bread laced with cyanide!
        • Just eat the bread and spit out the poison…
    • But poison in bread is exactly what Jesus call’s sin in His church!

1 Corinthians 5:1-6 ESV  It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father’s wife.  (2)  And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you.  (3)  For though absent in body, I am present in spirit; and as if present, I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did such a thing.  (4)  When you are assembled in the name of the Lord Jesus and my spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus,  (5)  you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.  (6)  Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?

  • You allow sin in your church, Paul says to the church in Corinth.
    • You allow this horrible sexual sin in your church…
    • You say it is just one man, but don’t you know, HIS SIN WILL SPREAD.
    • A little leaven leavens the whole lump…
      • In other words, it just takes a little bit of yeast to make a whole lump of dough rise…
      • AND IT JUST TAKES A LITTLE BIT OF SIN TO MAKE WHAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE HOLY SINFUL!
      • You have poisoned the church, Paul says, and the only answer is to get rid of the sin!
      • BECAUSE HOLYNESS AND SINFULNESS CAN NOT AND DO NOT MIX!
  • It is why we don’t celebrate Halloween!
    • IT IS WICKED! IT IS EVIL! IT CELEBRATES EVIL. And as a church we will have NOTHING to do with it.
    • No harvest parties… No Trunk or Treat… NONE OF THAT! Evil is Evil, and it should have nothing to do with Holiness…
      • BUT pastor think of all the kids we could reach if we did trunk or treat!!!!
        • Should we do evil that good may abound! NO!
    • That’s why we don’t allow secular music to be played in the church… this place is holy.
    • That’s why I don’t listen to secular music in my car, because I want to be holy.
    • It’s why I don’t watch filth on TV, or Netflix, or youtube.
  • And listen, listen… if you and your family are constantly living in chaos… if your life and your emotions are constantly in turmoil… 9 times out of 10 it is because you don’t know what makes for peace… Just like Jerusalem.
    • Most of the time when people come to me and their life is in Chaos… it is because they have tried to mix the holy with the sinful.
      • Sure they come to church… but they aren’t reading their Bible…
      • Sure they worship… at church… but at home they listen to filthy secular music.
      • They watch filthy tv shows, read filthy books, play filthy video games, hang out with filthy friends who tell filthy jokes, share filthy stories, and sometimes use filthy language.
    • And then they come to me and say “why is my life so chaotic” and I am like “Because it’s covered in filth!”
  • And listen, I am not trying to be all fire and brimestoney…
    • I am not saying “If you read harry potter you are going to hell! And if you listen to anything but Hymns then that’s then end of the world… and you better name all your kids after obscure Old Testament Bible characters or they will grow up to do drugs!”
  • No, I am not tying to be THAT guy… I don’t want to be THAT preacher…
    • I am just saying use common sense. Holiness creates peace… sinfulness and holiness can’t mix. So if there is no peace in your life the first thing to do is look for the sin and get it out! Amen?!
  • That brings me to my final point this morning… Jesus takes Holiness very seriously!

Point Two – Jesus Takes Holiness Very Seriously

Luke 19:45-46 ESV  And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold,  (46)  saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a den of robbers.”

  • This part of Jesus’ ministry is shared in every single one of the Gospels… that means IT’S VERY IMPORTANT! And in the Gospel of John we get a lot more details about what happened here…

John 2:13-17 ESV  The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.  (14)  In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there.  (15)  And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables.  (16)  And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make my Father’s house a house of trade.”  (17)  His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.”

  • Let me just read verse 15 again… in case you missed it.

John 2:15 ESV  And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables.

  • I remember when I was a licensed Southern Baptist pastor… the pastor over me and I were arguing about something or another, and he said “Jesus cared so much about Holiness that He used a whip to drive people out of the temple!”
    • And me, being young and dumb and thinking that this pastor was trying to be all “Hollier than thou” and “fire and brimestony” I was like “JESUS WOULD NEVER USE A WHIP!!!!!!!!!!”
    • Yeah… He opened up his Bible to John 2:15 and asked me to read it aloud….
    • “And… making… a…whip”
    • Have you ever been so wrong that you just can’t speak… yeah… checkmate Christian…
  • Y’all Jesus cared so much about holiness in God’s temple that when He saw sin taking place in the temple Jesus made a whip and DROVE THE SIN OUT!
    • Let me say that again:
    • Jesus cares so much about holiness in God’s temple that when He saw sin taking place in the temple Jesus made a whip and DROVE THE SIN OUT!
      • You see what was happening was a holy feast called Passover…
      • And thousands of Jews from around the world would travel to Jerusalem to celebrate it.
      • But they needed things to celebrate Passover… things like sheep, and pigeons, and oxen.
      • But these things had to be bought with Jewish money from the temple…
      • So money changers would take their foreign currency and change it for Jewish currency, but at a VERY inflated rate… because the travelers had no choice…
      • Then they would sell the items for Passover at a very inflated price.
    • That would be like selling rolls of toilet paper at 15 bucks a piece in the middle of a pandemic.
    • Or selling bottles of water at 10 bucks a piece after a hurricane…
    • It is taken advantage of peoples needs in a time when you should be HELPING people not hurting them.
    • And that is exactly what was happening… these salesmen and money changers… in God’s HOLY temple… where robing people…
  • And Jesus don’t play that… So He drove them out with a whip, turned over their tables and dumped out their money…
  • One more time let me say it…
    • Jesus cares so much about holiness in God’s temple that when He saw sin taking place in the temple Jesus made a whip and DROVE THE SIN OUT!
  • Now think about that while I read this verse…

1 Corinthians 6:19 ESV  Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,

  • The Bible says, if you are born again, that YOU are a temple where God dwells!
    • Do you care enough about God’s temple to drive out the sin?
    • Or are you happy with “Eat the meat and spit out the bones”

Conclusion

Conclusion here

  • Gospel Call
  • Sin repentance call, especially sexual sin which 1 Corinthians  6:19 was talking about.
