Expect the Greater Reward | Luke 20:27-40

Lords Prayer

Before we begin today’s sermon would you join me in praying the words our Lord taught us to pray?

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done
in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: Amen

Introduction

Please stand for the reading of God’s Word.

Luke 20:27-40 ESV  There came to him some Sadducees, those who deny that there is a resurrection,  (28)  and they asked him a question, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies, having a wife but no children, the man must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.  (29)  Now there were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and died without children.  (30)  And the second  (31)  and the third took her, and likewise all seven left no children and died.  (32)  Afterward the woman also died.  (33)  In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had her as wife.”  (34)  And Jesus said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage,  (35)  but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and to the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage,  (36)  for they cannot die anymore, because they are equal to angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.  (37)  But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in the passage about the bush, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.  (38)  Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for all live to him.”  (39)  Then some of the scribes answered, “Teacher, you have spoken well.”  (40)  For they no longer dared to ask him any question.

  • Religions is something that has always been hotly debated.
    • In Jesus’ time there were two man groups of people, the Sadducees and the Pharisees.
    • And these two groups of people would argue back and fourth about different theological things.
    • After Jesus there was the Baptists and the Anabaptists.
    • Then came the Catholics and the Protestants.
    • Then the Reformed and the Evangelicals.
    • Then the Liberals and the Conservative Christians.
    • And now we are seeing a divide in the church between the full gospel Christians and the antinomian Christians.
      • That is today, the main divide amongst American Christians today is if we believe in the whole of scripture (That is a full gospel belief) or if we should only believe in the new testament and we should throw out the Old testament… that is antinomianism.
        • And as a side note, I would argue that Antinomianism is the most deadly enemy of the gospel to date… but I digress.
    • But I digress, my point is simply this…
      • People have a tendency of adding difficulty, and complexity to the Word of God.
        • They look for ways to make it say what they want it to say and to mean what they want it to mean.
        • And then when confronted by others who have done the very same thing, but have come to different conclusions, when they meet such people they argue and debate and fight and point fingers and call names.
        • Then, in the midst of all the arguing there are some, lacking either spine or knowledge or both, who in an attempt to be “above those who argue” say things like “God is too great for us to comprehend, so we need not argue about such things…”.
      • So you have these three groups of people… people who argue A, people who argue B, and a third group that argues that no one should be arguing.
    • And all of this leads to a designation of the Gospel and the truth of God.
      • Two those who argue A or B I quote to them:

2 Timothy 2:23-24 ESV  Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies; you know that they breed quarrels.  (24)  And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil,

  • To those who say “God is in-comprehendible so we better not try to think to hard about it”
    • I say nonsense! God is capable of explaining himself to us.
    • “But God’s thoughts and ways are higher than ours!” I hear them protest
    • Yes! Agree! And praise God that He decided to reveal Himself through His Word!
    • Listen the point of Scripture is to reveal God and His plan, to help us Know who God is, how He thinks, and How he wants us to live.
    • So if God’s purpose for Scripture is to reveal Himself, and if His word is confusing and only able to be understood through lofty arguments and complex theories… THEN GOD DID A BAD JOB OF REVEALING HIMSELF.
  • But good news! God revealed Himself plainly in scripture. All we must do is read, study, and obey His word and we can Know Him.!
  • This church, is the lessons the Sadducees learned when they tried to trick Jesus.
    • They asked what they thought was a deep and complex question about marriage and heaven.
    • Jesus answered with a simple answer. There is no marriage in Heaven.
      • The Sadducees could have figured this out without going through all the trouble of tracking down the messiah if all they did was read God’s Word!
  • The Pharisees and Sadducees argued over the resurrection… is their life after death.
    • And if they just would have read their scriptures they would know there is indeed life after death, and it will be glorious.
    • If they would have listened to God’s word they would live their life Expecting the greater reward.

Point One – Heaven is Real (and so is Hell)

Luke 20:34-36 ESV  And Jesus said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage,  (35)  but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and to the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage,  (36)  for they cannot die anymore, because they are equal to angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.

  • The Sadducees didn’t believe in life after death.
    • They didn’t believe in Heaven, they didn’t believe in hell.
    • So they thought of a trick to try to trap Jesus, who taught about heaven and hell.
      • If a woman get’s married and is widowed, she is allowed to marry again according to scripture.
      • If this happens seven times, all without sin, and then she dies and goes to heaven who is her husband?
        • They thought it was a perfect Gotcha question.
  • Jesus answer was stunning.
    • “Marriage between an man and a wife is not a thing in heaven”.
      • What? How can that be?!
      • Simple, heaven is EVERYTHING the Bible tells us it is. And if that is the case, marriage relationships are no longer needed.

Revelation 21:4 ESV  He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

1 Corinthians 2:9 ESV  But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him”—

Revelation 22:1-5 ESV  Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb  (2)  through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.  (3)  No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him.  (4)  They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.  (5)  And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.

  • You see, it is NOT that marriage is bad, it’s that heaven is good.
    • Heaven is so unimaginably good.
    • No more pain, no more sorrow, no more loneliness. No more tears. No more struggling. No more injustice. No more hatred. No illness, or death. No injuries. No depression. No more being tired.
    • HEAVEN IS SO AMAZING THAT IT MAKES MARIAGE LOOK LIKE CHOPPED LIVER.
  • YOU ARE GOING TO BE WITH JESUS.
    • Now I love my wife, but I love Jesus more!
    • And she loves me, but she loves Jesus more!
    • I love my kids but I love God more.
    • They love me, but I teach them to love God more.
  • Want to see if you have a false idol in your life, just answer this question.

I really hope heaven has _____________

  • I really hope heaven has, what?
    • Sex
    • Television
    • Video Games
    • Football
    • Taco Bell.
  • However you answer that question shows what you hold ETERNALLY dear, it is an idol.
  • Y’all, in Heaven you get to be with your Creator for eternity.
    • If that is not enough you need to examine your life.
  • Reject Passivity
  • Accept Responsibility
  • Lead Courageously
  • Expect the Greater Reward.
    • In men’s group, this is our definition of a Godly man. But I think the E especially applies to all believers.
    • You see, as men, we are not supposed to do things for temporary and instant gratification.
      • We are supposed to keep the future in mind.
      • A child plays video games instead of studying… they have a good time in the moment, but they have to face the consequences of not studying later down the road.
      • A child eats nothing but candy because it makes them happy in the moment, but they have to face the challenges of obesity for the rest of their lives.
      • A child doesn’t work out, because working out hurts. But men chose to work out, not for temporary pleasures, but for long term gains.
    • So it is in our Christian walk. We must expect the greater reward!

Point Two – Your Eternal Life Has Already Started!

  • That brings me to point two… your life has already started!

Luke 20:37-38 ESV  But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in the passage about the bush, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.  (38)  Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for all live to him.”

  • Jesus is again proving His point that there is life after death.
    • He says “Look at the scriptures, just read them plainly! God says ‘I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob’ not ‘I was the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob”.
    • And we know that God is not a god of the dead, that’s what pagans believe, but God is a God of the living!
    • Therefore we KNOW that Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob must still be alive!
      • You don’t need Calvin to help you understand that. You don’t need Luther, or Wesley, or Arminius. You don’t need commentaries, and lectures, and a PHD in theology to understand that! You just need to read the Word of God and BELIEVE what it says!
      • It’s Plan.
      • GOD IS THE GOD OF THE LIVING!
  • “Well that’s great pastor, but what does that mean for me today?”
  • It means you need to stop living like your dying!
    • So many people are concerned only with this life…
    • It’s like they think they get a restart when they get to heaven.
      • It’s like people think their eternal life is not going to look like this…
      • But instead they think this bit will be cut off and separated.
  • I have news for you, you don’t get a restart when you get to heaven. If you are born again, YOU ALREADY HAD YOUR RESTART!
  • If you are born again your eternal life has already started!
  • This bit starts when you accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and from here your life never ends.
  • Therefore, what are you waiting for? Start living with an eternal mindset.
    • Yet so many Christians live their lives as if they are just in a holding pattern waiting to land.
    • Just circling the airport, waiting for their chance to land.
      • Sure they call into mission control once a week, to make sure someone still knows they are there…
  • But our life is not a journey in an airplane… with a departure and an arrival.
    • We are not on a trip that started somewhere and ends somewhere else.
  • Yes our trip started when we were born again… BUT IT NEVER ENDS.
  • Your eternity has already started! Are you living like it?
    • God died and rose again so you could personally talk to Him…
      • Are you?
    • Thousands of people have died to get God’s word in your hands so you could read it.
      • Do you?
    • God knew you before you were in the womb and put a calling over your life.
      • Are you living in that calling?
    • God created you to praise and worship Him!
      • Are you doing that more than 30 minutes on a Sunday?
  • The truth is, I think there are some Christians who are not going to much like heaven.
    • How can I say this, simple.
      • If you don’t like to talk to God now… what makes you think you will like heaven where you get to talk to God forever.
      • If you don’t like to listen to God’s word, are you really going to like a Kingdom run by that Word?
      • If you don’t like to serve God now, if you don’t know the joy of serving in your calling… then you might be shocked to find out that you will have a job in heaven! Because we were created to work, and work was created to be fulfilling.
      • If you don’t like to sing praises to God now, what makes you think you will enjoy an eternity of worshiping him.

Revelation 4:8-11 ESV  And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and within, and day and night they never cease to say, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!”  (9)  And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to him who is seated on the throne, who lives forever and ever,  (10)  the twenty-four elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne, saying,  (11)  “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”

  • THEY NEVER CEASE TO SAY “Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord God Almighty”. And the Elders never cease to fall down and worship saying “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power”.
    • When I first read this verse as a young Christian I remember thinking… “Dang, stinks to be them… that sounds like a boring eternity”.
    • But now, as I mature, I can see the beauty of worshiping in perfect bliss… with no pain, no sorrow, no anxiety… no stinking flesh holding me back.
  • I once experienced what I believe was the Throne Room of God…
    • I had fallen out in the Spirit… and I woke up in the presence of God… I couldn’t see much, I saw dimly, as through a bad mirror, but I was with God… and I begin to worship Him.
      • And it was the perfect euphoria… In that moment I felt no pain, sorrow, anxieties, hunger, thirst, or fear.
      • Just the euphoria of being with God and worshiping Him.
      • I didn’t want to leave that experience, but God commanded me to Get up because there was more work to do here.
    • One day, I will be done with the work here, and I will be with God forever, and how sweet that will be.
  • Until then, I am going to live like I am a new creation already, because I am.
    • And because now the only part of me that doesn’t like the idea of heaven is my flesh, I will work on killing that flesh daily, amen?!

Conclusion

  • I want to conclude with this, turn with me to Hebrews Chapter 11.
    • Hebrews 11 is often called the Faith Hall of Fame, or the Hall of Faith as I like to call it.
      • It lists out the most faith filled people in the Old Testament… and look at verses 13-16.

Hebrews 11:13-16 ESV  These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.  (14)  For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland.  (15)  If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return.  (16)  But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.

  • Read verse 16 one more time…
    • The most faith filled people in scripture lived with a desire for heaven! They lived expecting the greater reward!
