Ask, Seek, Knock, Repeat | Luke 11:5-10

Ask, Seek, Knock, Repeat – Luke 11:5-10

Introduction

Luke 11:1-4 ESV  Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.”  (2)  And he said to them, “When you pray, say: “Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come.  (3)  Give us each day our daily bread,  (4)  and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.”

  • Over the past few weeks we have talked extensively about this section of teaching.
    • Jesus’s disciples saw Him praying, they wanted to be like Jesus, thus they wanted to PRAY like Jesus, so they asked Him “Teach us to pray”
  • Jesus responds with what is known as the Lord’s Prayer. In Luke we see a shortened version of this.
    • Jesus starts with “Our Father” which signifies this is a prayer for Christians, people who are in the family of God.
      • If that’s not you this morning, don’t worry, we will invite you to join the family at the end of service!
    • Jesus continues “Hallowed be your name” That means “Let your name be MADE Holy”.
      • We as Christians should desire that everyone sees God as Holy, and we should seek that in our prayer life.
      • Further we should live in a Holy manner because we carry the name of Christ with us wherever we go.
    • Then Jesus adds “Your Kingdom come”.
      • God’s Kingdom is everyplace where God is King.
      • Hearts, households, churches, even nations.
      • God desires ALL to be saved and His nation will include people from every tribe tongue and nation.
    • We are then instructed to pray for provision “Give us this day our daily bread”
      • Brother Jared Preached on this.
      • Our daily spiritual provision, which is Jesus Christ the bread of life.
      • Our daily physical provision… not what we want, but what we need!
    • Finally, we pray about sin… “lead us not into temptation, forgive our sins as we forgive the sins of others”.
      • What does that mean? It means we hate sin so much we want NOTHING to do with it, not even temptation.
      • It means we forgive others when they sin against us.
      • And it means that we, because of our relationship with God, desire forgiveness when we do things that hurt Him.
        • Again, this is for believers, this is not about salvation, this is about relationship.
        • That first prayer of repentance is different, and we will talk about that as we close service.
  • SO! Jesus has taught us about what to pray for, and what that looks like… know Jesus is going to teach us when to pray and in what manner.
    • We have learned the details, now we learn the application, amen?

Bring up Title Slide

  • This is what our prayer life should look like when it comes to petitioning prayer… when it comes to asking God for things…
    • Because all of this prayer is asking God for things isn’t it?
      • We ask for God’s name to be Holy
      • We ask for His Kingdom to Come
      • We ask for provision
      • We ask for forgiveness
    • These are all petitions.
      • Now there are other forms of prayer, prayers of thanksgiving and praise, those kinds of prayers are VERY important and should be on our minds and lips always!
      • But for this prayer we are talking about petitions… about asking God for things…
      • And when it comes to petitioning God, this is how you do it.
    • Ask, Seek, Knock, repeat.
      • First you ask, then you seek, then you knock.
      • And you keep on asking, and you keep on seeking, and you keep on knocking, and you keep on, and you keep on, and you keep on… until God brings the answer, or the provision, or whatever you are seeking.
    • ASK, SEEK, KNOCK, ASK, SEEK, KNOCK, ASK, SEEK, KNOCK…

Luke 11:5-10 ESV  And he said to them, “Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves,  (6)  for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’;  (7)  and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything’?  (8)  I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence he will rise and give him whatever he needs.  (9)  And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.  (10)  For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.

Pray Pray Pray Pray Pray

Point One – First Ask, Then Seek, Then Knock

  • The secret to petionanary prayers is that it is not “Ask, or seek, or knock” but that it is “Ask AND Seek AND Knock”.
    • If you need something in your life then the first thing you should be doing is asking God for it!”
      • Don’t start seeking without asking first.
      • If you are seeking a wife but you haven’t asked God for it yet, you may in fact find a woman, but it probably won’t be the right one.
      • If you are seeking a job but haven’t asked God for it, then  don’t blame God when you find one that doesn’t work out.
      • If you are seeking reconciliation but haven’t asked God for it then don’t be surprised when you find conflict instead of Grace.
    • This is Christianity 101, right, but so many people miss it. ASK FIRST.

Luke 11:9-10 ESV  And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.  (10)  For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.

  • Look church, there is an order here, God did not just arbitrarily through these things in scripture. There is an order.
    • ASK FIRST.
    • You have no business seeking if you have not first asked.
    • And how hard is it to ask, church? Get on your knees, in your closest, in private, and ask, you don’t have to know the right words. You don’t have the most powerful prayer ever… just talk to God, you know, like He is your Father.

Matthew 6:6-8 ESV  But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.  (7)  “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.  (8)  Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

  • Let me show you how easy it is to ask… someone tell me something you need from God…
    • *Pray for those in an example. Maybe even on knees?*
  • Now, after you ask, whats next?
    • Well either God will clearly answer “No, you don’t need that right now” or God will miraculously provide right then and there… but most times God desires us to seek.
  • SO MANY CHRISTIANS MISS OUT ON GOD’S GIFTS AND PROVESION BECAUSE THE STOP AT ASKING.
    • They ask God for something, and maybe even God says YES! But then they stop… and wait, and nothing happens… then they blame God for not providing.
    • BUT LISTEN TO JESUS… He doesn’t just say ask… He says ask and SEEK and KNOCK.
  • So after you ask you need to seek.
    • You need to open your EYES up to God’s provision. You need to be on the look out for the answer to your prayer… you should be actively searching for it.
  • I know many of you have heard this joke before, but it is the perfect example of what happens when you ask but you don’t seek.
    • *Tell joke* A man is stranded in the middle of a city that is flooding rapidly. He rushes to the roof of his home as the water fills his living room. On his roof he cries out to God “Father, I am asking… I am begging… SAVE ME FROM THIS FLOOD” to which God replied “I will save you my child. As the water raises to his second floor a row boat comes by, the man in the row boat says “Get in!” but the man on the roof responds “No, I am waiting for God to save me”. The water now reaching the attic a power boat comes by “Hope in, says the power boat driver” “No!” replies the man on the roof “My God will save me”. Finally, as the water is up to the roof and the man barley can stand anymore, a helicopter comes and throws down a rope “Grab on to the rope” “No, my God will save me!”. Well, the man end’s up drowning and going to heaven. Angry with God the man asks “I THOUGHT YOU WOULD SAVE ME! I ASKED YOU TO SAVE ME! YOU SAID YOU WOULD SAVE ME!” to which God replied “What are you talking about? I sent you a row boat, a power boat, and even a helicopter!”
  • This church, this is what happens when you ask, but you fail to seek.
    • So you need a wife, you have asked God and He didn’t say now… it’s time to start opening your eyes.
    • So you need provision… maybe it’s time to start looking for a job.
    • You need healing? Maybe take a look at your lifestyle choices, or maybe it’s time to book an appointment with a doctor.
    • Whatever you ask for, if God says yes, then start looking for that answer, start seeking it, don’t just sit around waiting to drown to death.
  • Finally we have to knock, don’t we, knocking is putting an action to our seeking and asking.
    • What does this look like?
    • Maybe it looks like taking a girl on a date.
      • Don’t just assume the first pretty thing you see is God’s provision for a wife.
      • Ask a girl out, she says no, ok, God shut that door, find another one to knock on.
      • Go out with a girl, she’s not saved, cool… stop dating her, invite her to church, and move on.
      • Keep going until God opens the door for you.

Revelation 3:7 ESV  “And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: ‘The words of the holy one, the true one, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens.

  • When God opens a door for you… for a spouse, for a job, for a car, for healing, for whatever… NO ONE CAN SHUT IT… but you need to knock to find out if that door is open.
    • That means going on dates.
    • That means applying for jobs.
    • That means getting off the couch and DOING something about your need.
    • Don’t just sit around and wait for God to come down in fire to remove you from the roof you are stranded on… sometimes you have to get in the boat!
  • Y’all picking up what I am laying down? Good!

Point Two – Keep Asking, Keep Seeking, Keep Knocking

  • It may not be enough to ask once, it may not be enough to seek once, it may not be enough to knock once. YOU HAVE TO KEEP ASKING, KEEP SEEKING, KEEP KNOCKING. YOU HAVE TO KEEP GOING.
    • Does God answer prayers immediately sometimes, yup He sure does.
    • Does God answer prayers immediately always? NOT BY A LONG SHOT.

Luke 11:5-8 ESV  And he said to them, “Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves,  (6)  for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’;  (7)  and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything’?  (8)  I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence he will rise and give him whatever he needs.

  • Do you see what Jesus is saying? He is saying “BE THE ANNOYING FRIEND WHO WONT GO AWAY”.
    • Why? Because we are going to annoy God into answering our prayer? No, probably not… but because our persistence proves our passion.
    • OUR PERSESTANCE PROVES OUR PASSION.

James 5:16 KJV  Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

  • Do you want your prayers to AVAILETH MUCH? Do you want your prayers to accomplish much?
    • Then they need to be FERVENT. That means a passionate and persistent pushing in. That means you are not giving up until you find victory. That means you will go the extra mile and however many more miles it takes because you SO DESIRE whatever it is you are praying for.
  • There is a big difference between praying “I guess I could use some provision Lord” in between episodes of whatever you are binge watching on Netflix…
    • There is a big difference between praying “I guess I could use some provision” and praying “Father I need provision, help me find provision, provide for me Lord” and praying that all day, every day, as you seek provision and knock on doors, and poor out your EVERYTHING to find the answer to that prayer.
  • Don’t tell me you need provision, but you are only applying for one job a week.
  • Don’t tell me you need forgiveness, but you never come down to the alter.
  • Don’t tell me you need whatever, but your life doesn’t reflect that.
  • Listen, last week we prayed a prayer of forgiveness… and I know some people still went home struggling with unforgiveness.
    • DON’T GIVE UP! That prayer may be the first of THOUSANDS for you! But it will come if you desire it.
  • I struggled with unforgiveness for at least a decade of my Christian life. But the forgiveness Christ gave me on that Cross COMPELLED me to continue to seek to forgive others, no matter how hard or how long it took.
  • Listen, church, listen! I have prayed for healing and seen the blind immediately healed, the crippled immediately walk.
    • And yet there are people who I have prayed for EVERY DAY for the past four years who we have yet to be healed… what should I do, stop praying?! NO! I will pray until healing comes, or Jesus comes back. BECAUSE I KNOW MY GOD CAN HEAL AND I AM PASSIONATLY SEEKING THAT HEALING FOR OTHERS.
  • Whatever you need church, whatever you are asking for… don’t stop asking, don’t stop seeking, don’t stop knocking.

Luke 11:9-10 ESV  And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.  (10)  For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.

  • Eric’s testimony about going to Guatemala.
    • Eric asks if he can go.
    • God says go.
    • Asks off work, they say yes.
    • Then they say no…
    • BUT GOD SAID GO.
    • Eric keeps asking and keeps seeking.
    • Finally granted the ability to go.
    • Then get’s a new position and because of that gets an extra week of vacation!

Conclusion

Alter Call Salvation

  • Two reasons you might not find the answer to prayer… first, you ask with wrong motives…

James 4:3 ESV  You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.

  • If your prayer doesn’t line up with the Word, then you can forget it. God is not going to go against His word to answer your prayer.
    • Yet another reason it is SO important to be in the Word daily.
  • Second you, God may not answer your prayer if you are in sin…

2 Chronicles 7:14 ESV  if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

  • Look again at this verse from James about effective prayer…

James 5:16 KJV  Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

  • IT STARTS WITH CONFESSION AND HEALING OF SINS!
  • I want your prayers to be answered, but God want’s your life to be holy first! Therefore as your pastor I want your life to be Holy so that your prayers will be abundantly answered far beyond what you could ever imagine! I WANT TO PASTOR A BLESSED CHURCH, AMEN?!
