The Sower Part 4 – Weed your Garden | Luke 8:1-18

YouTube video sermon

1. Get Saved. 2. Obey God.

Introduction

Luke 8:5-8 ESV  “A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell along the path and was trampled underfoot, and the birds of the air devoured it.  (6)  And some fell on the rock, and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture.  (7)  And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it.  (8)  And some fell into good soil and grew and yielded a hundredfold.” As he said these things, he called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

Luke 8:11 ESV  Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.

Luke 8:14 ESV  And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature.

  • Alright church, we are on the fourth sermon in our Sower series…
    • Jesus has given us this awesome parable, this word picture, describing religion, and faith, and really Christianity.
    • He has told us when we evangelize, when we sow seed. There will be some seed that falls on the path… we talked about that didn’t we, the path is that concrete heart… an atheist who refuses to listen to the things of God, who won’t even give it the chance to sink in…
      • And worse than that, the Lukewarm Christian who is surrounded by the word of God, who goes to church, who does “Christian” like things… but they again refuse to let God’s Word Change them. They are, according to Revelation 3:16, worse than the atheist…
    • Then we talked about the rocky Soil.. the Rocky soil is someone who becomes a Christian, maybe not a true one, but they are at least on the way… they have some good soil, but there is also these rocks, these dark areas that the seed can’t grow.
      • We talked about how we all have a potential to be the rocky soil, how we all have dark corners of our life we don’t want to let the light in…
    • And we talked about the remedy for this… water… watering the soil with God’s Word and discipleship… having someone who loves you enough to help take the rocks out of your soil.
    • Finally today we talk about the last kind of “bad” ground… the weedy soil.

Bring up Title Slide

  • We have all seen houses like this… right? Just covered in dandelions?
    • Here is the thing church, there is nothing wrong with this soil…
      • In fact this is VERY FERTILE SOIL…
    • The only difference between this soil and the good soil we are going to talk about is the presence of weeds!
      • Spoiler alert… the good soil is what we are supposed to be, that’s a strong Christian, growing in our faith, planted by streams of living water, becoming more Christ like, firm on the Rock of Christ, never shacking always enduring, fruit bearing Christian.
    • The only difference between that soil and this soil is the WEEDS. So today we are going to talk about some weeds.

Point One – Every Garden Has Weeds, Every Christian Has Sin

Luke 8:14 ESV  And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature.

  • Every garden has the weeds, the difference between a well-kept garden in a nasty garden is that there is a gardener who removes the weeds in a well-kept garden.
    • Who that will preach right there… let me say that again…
  • Every garden has the weeds, the difference between a well-kept garden in a nasty garden is that there is a gardener who removes the weeds in a well-kept garden.
  • Listen church, let me just make this crystal clear… the weeds that Jesus describing in our lives… there is another word for them… it’s called SIN!
  • S-I-N SIN! And we all have it…
    • Listen, church, hear me! If you are a Christian, then you have some good soil… God has created you as a living garden designed to bear godly fruit… designed to be beautiful and to thrive in Christ… a living garden of God’s glory. YOU HAVE GOOD SOIL…
    • But with good soil comes weeds!
    • And do we all remember what the definition of sin is? LAWLESSNESS.

1 John 3:4 ESV  Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness.

  • SIN, by definition, is breaking God’s law. Disobeying Him. And it happens to all of us, we all sin from time to time.
  • A a Christian you are going to have sin, you just are…
  • But don’t get me wrong, let me just put an asterisks on this point… YOU ARE NOT A SINNER… no, you are SAVED, you are a saint, you are Christ’s righteousness, more than a conqueror, a royal priest or priestess.
    • NO, you are not a sinner, you are a CHRISTIAN who sometimes sins. But your sin does not define you, nor does a single weed define a beautiful garden.
  • Look at it like this…

SHOW TITLE SLIDE AGAIN

  • Before you are saved your garden… your life… might look something like this… the first thing you see is the weeds… the sin… it is the weeds that DEFINES this garden… I found this image by googling the words “Ugly weeds”… literally ugly weeds defines this image. Away from Christ, people are sinners, they are defined by their ugly sin…
  • After we are saved, born again, after we allow Christ to come in and change EVERYTHING about us… when we die to ourselves and create anew… planted a fresh… a new and beautiful creation in Christ… our turns into something like this one from the Netherlands…

SHOW Garden.jpg

  • Look how beautiful this garden is… it is thriving… I love that there is a river running through it
  • In fact let me read the first three verses of Psalm 1 for you… think about this picture as I read from Psalm 1

OVERLAY THIS SCRIPTURE OVER GARDEN.JPG (GARDEN.JPG SHOULD BE THE BACKGROUND)
Psalms 1:1-3 ESV
Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers;  (2)  but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.  (3)  He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.

  • That’s us church, we are this garden! Amen?! If you are born again, then this picture is you!
  • Your beauty in Christ defines you, not your sin…
    • But… hear me now… I GAURENTEE YOU THERE IS WEEDS IN THIS GARDEN.
    • This is a real garden in the Netherlands… it would be Ludacris to think there is not one… two… 15… whatever weeds growing here… there must be, there is good soil here, there is going to be weeds that sprout up…
    • BUT… and this a big BUT… I am also sure that every morning or so there is a Dutch gardener whose goes through the garden, waters the plants and PLUCKS OUT THE WEEDS.
    • And just because you found one or two weeds in this garden, does it stop being glorious? Does it stop being beautiful?
      • No, it is only when the weeds are allowed to take over that that happens.
    • But the fact remains, every garden ahs weeds, and every Christian has sin.

Romans 3:23 ESV  for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

1 John 1:8 ESV  If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

1 John 1:10 ESV  If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

  • We all have sin… now I share this for two reasons…
    • First, if you think you are so holy that you think you never sin then I suggest that you may not be saved at all, and like a pharisee you are blind to your own sin. Because if you were saved you would have the Holy Spirit working inside of you, growing you from Glory to Glory, convicting you of your sin and encouraging you in your victories.
    • Second, and I think this is probably more for us here today… don’t let the devil lie to you and tell you that because you sin that you are not a Christian. If you have been born again, if you have been saved, if you have the power of the Holy Spirit working inside of you, you are a Christian. The Devil is a liar, he want’s you to be ashamed.
      • NEVER TAKE THE BAIT. Be ashamed of your sin, yes, sin is a shameful thing… but never be ashamed of who you are… you are MORE THAN A CONQUER! You are not a sinner, you are a saint! Yeah you mess up, but that’s not who you are, you are and will be victorious in Christ.
    • Because you see… if the devil can convince you that either you never sin… or that you sin so much that there is no point… then the devil has convinced you not to invite the gardener in to pluck the weeds.
      • One person sees no need for the gardener.
      • The other thinks the Gardner is not good enough to weed their garden.

Point Two – LET THE GARDENER WEED YOUR GARDEN LEAST YOU BE CHOCKED OUT

John 20:11-16 ESV  But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb.  (12)  And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet.  (13)  They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.”  (14)  Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus.  (15)  Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.”  (16)  Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher).

  • How fitting that the Resurrected Jesus appeared first to Marry as The Gardener. Notice that it is not “a gardener” but “the gardener”. In both the Greek and Arimiac, the definitive article is used here specifying that Jesus was “The Gardener” not “a Gardener”.
    • And even though the text says marry supposed Him to be the gardener, that supposed does not mean that she was wrong… in fact the context, especially in the original language, points to her being right, at least partly, in her assumption.
  • Now I don’t know for sure that John was trying to make a theological point by mentioning that Mary supposed Jesus to be the Gardner… but I would find it odd if He wasn’t…
  • In fact, I think “The Gardner” is a proper and holy name for Jesus because that is exactly what He needs to be in our lives… the Gardner.
  • THAT MEANS, CHURCH, THAT MEANS THAT WE ARE NOT THE GARDNER!
  • Listen… listen now, this is important…
    • IT IS NOT OUR JOB TO REMOVE SIN FROM OUR LIVES! IT IS NOT OUR JOB TO WEED THE GARDEN!
      • It is our job to repent from our sin and confess it… then the Gardener, Jesus, comes and takes it away.

1 John 1:8-9 ESV  If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.  (9)  If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

  • Some Christians struggle their whole life… because they are trying to do the Job of Jesus… they are trying to weed their own garden, they are trying to become righteous on their own… YOU CAN’T DO IT!
    • But Jesus can… HE IS FAITHFUL AND JUST TO CLEANSE US.
    • If you have been fighting sin for so long… and you are tired… and you just don’t seem to be making any headway… let me challenge you… maybe you aren’t letting the Gardner do your job.
    • Therefore this is how I encourage you to pray “Lord I repent… I don’t want to do this sin anymore… I want more of you… Lord would you help me to repent… would you come and take this sin from me… and should my flesh desire to hold on to this sin, then Lord would you come in and RIP this sin away from me like a Gardner ripping up weeds”.
    • And if you are struggling even with that prayer, church, God gave you a prescription for that to… confess your sins to someone, a brother in Christ, who can help you pray, can hold you accountable, can help you grow!

Luke 8:14 ESV  And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature.

Show Title Slide Once Again

  • The sad reality, though, church… is that there are so many Christians walking around with gardens like this…
  • Good soil… but covered in sin…
  • And they will have the audacity to say “BUT DANDILIONS ARE BEAUTIFUL” No they are not… they are WEEDS and they are killing your garden.
  • NEVER, CHURCH, NEVER BE OK WITH SIN.
    • In no way or shape should you be ok with sin.
    • Never make excuses for sin.
    • Never try decrease the impact of your own sin, on the contrary you should look at your sin and look at it as the uglies nastiest thing in the world.
    • That way you are DESPERATE for the Gardner to come in and get rid of it.
  • JESUS DIDN’T DIE SO WE COULD KEEP ON SINNING!

Romans 6:1-14 ESV  What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?  (2)  By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?  (3)  Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?  (4)  We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.  (5)  For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.  (6)  We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.  (7)  For one who has died has been set free from sin.  (8)  Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.  (9)  We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him.  (10)  For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God.  (11)  So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.  (12)  Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions.  (13)  Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.  (14)  For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

  • Let me read verse one and two, once again, just to emphasize it.

Romans 6:1-2 ESV  What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?  (2)  By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?

  • Y’all, perfect Christianity is very simple, it’s not complicated… I put this on facebook but let me share this here to…
    • TWO STEPS TO PERFECT CHRISTIANITY
      • Step One: Get Saved.
      • Step Two: Obey God.
    • THAT’S IT! Get saved, and obey God.
    • And when you fail at step two, no worries, let the gardener come into your life to remove the sin, don’t run from your sin, don’t hide from it… confess it and repent and allow Jesus to remove it from your life…

Isaiah 43:25 ESV  “I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins.

  • God is such a good gardener that not only does He pull your weeds out, He get’s rid of them so thoroughly that He forgets them entirely, as if they never happened!
  • Now, let’s get to praying and close with the Gospel, amen, I am fired up and ready to invite the Gardner in, amen?!

Conclusion – Invite worship leader up

Psalms 1:1-6 ESV  Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers;  (2)  but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.  (3)  He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.  (4)  The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away.  (5)  Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;  (6)  for the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
