Redeeming the Time | Ephesians 5:1-17

YouTube video sermon

We are not supposed to be walking around aimlessly, giving no attention to the path we are on!

Be Ready

Word for 2019:

We will experience a time of provision. Before Trump was elected- Obama and what I saw, and thought would happen. Because of the prayers of God’s people, WE are in a time of “reprieve” from the storm. God is preparing His people for a time of tribulation. We need to be ready.

Batten down the hatches- Be ready.

A time of prosperity is here for God’s people- be ready

Ephesians 5:1-17 New King James Version (NKJV)

5 Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.

But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. For [a]this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not be partakers with them.

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the [b]Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), 10 finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. 11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather [c]expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. 13 But all things that are [d]exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. 14 Therefore He says:

“Awake, you who sleep, Arise from the dead, And Christ will give you light.”

15 See then that you walk [e]circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, 16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

“See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” Ephesians 5:15-16

The basic meaning of Latin circumspicere is “to look around.” Near synonyms are prudent and cautious, though circumspect implies a careful consideration of all circumstances and a desire to avoid mistakes and bad consequences.

My husband tells our kids keep your head on a swivel, don’t look at your phone, be aware of your surroundings at all times.

This is what the Spirit is saying: a wise man will “ponder the path of your feet” Prov 4:26

We are not supposed to be walking around aimlessly, giving no attention to the path we are on.

This definition goes right along with “redeeming the time”. To “redeem” here in this verse, in the easiest of definitions is to do something that makes people have a good opinion about you after you have behaved badly. EX: I behaved so badly at a football game, after I came to the Lord; I refused to drink

“Redeeming the time” is not about enjoying life or your family, on the contrary; it’s about displaying to the world that you are a new creation in Jesus Christ. You are not the man you used to be. We are expected to show others the transformation that has taken place within us.

So how are we to be ready and walk circumspectly? This Scripture gives us two ways:

  1. Walk in love- Love

Let’s talk about love because love is not what we think it is. Love was created by God and for God, therefore He gets to define what love is.

Love GOD- first, everything else you do will flow from your love of God (the Church in Ephesus were rebuked for leaving their first love- they labored in His name, but left off being in love with HIM)

Stay in love with HIM by prayer and the study of His Word—You cannot love a God you do not know. I have a love affair with God’s Word. PRAYER (rollover)

Love others

Is anyone else tired of hearing, “that’s not very loving”?? Ugh

EX: I was at a women’s retreat in California and a girl came in off the street, this pastor did her job as a shepherd guarding her sheep

You can be sure if your feelings and emotions are involved, then it is NOT the apape love in which the Lord asks us to love others with. Agape is a purposeful love of the mind and the will. We cannot be a people led by our feelings and emotions- the world does that

You do not have to feel like spending time with someone to spend time with them

You don’t have to feel like being generous to be generous

You don’t have to feel liken being kind to be kind

You don’t have to feel like forgiving to forgive.

You do not have to feel like obeying the pastor to obey the pastor

All these are an act of the will and mind that is choosing to show love and reverence to another

WE are told what true agape love is- love is patient, love is kind, it doesn’t envy, it is not arrogant or rude, it does not insist on its own way, it’s not self-seeking, it is not resentful, makes no account of evil. It does not rejoice at lawlessness, but rejoices in the truth, love bears up under anything, is ready to believe the best of everyone, its hopes are fadeless under all circumstances, and it endures everything without weakening.

Discipline is love. Truth is love. I am not Matt, I cannot love like he does.

THIS is the power of God in your life. When we walk in love, we are imitators of God.

The key to walking in love is being secure as a child of God. When we live as His child, no matter what we go through, whether its mountains or valleys, good times or trouble, whether we are reaping what we have sown, or we under strict chastening of the Lord; we will not be moved. A secure child understands that His discipline is for my good EX: my mom v. my grandma, with my gma, it was the only time in my life that I felt secure

Five lies of Identity:

  1. I am what I have
  2. I am what I do
  3. I am what others say or think about me
  4. I am nothing more than my worst moment
  5. I am nothing less than my best moment

Are you self-righteous? You cannot say, “I am holy” and not walk in love and you cannot say you are walking in love and not be holy. These two things go hand in hand

1 John 3:10, 13-15 New King James Version (NKJV)

10 In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother.

13 Do not marvel, my brethren, if the world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love [c]his brother abides in death. 15 Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

We are supposed to be in fellowship and we are supposed to love the brethren in Christ. Period. You don’t necessarily have to be best friends with everyone… You have NO GROUND to stand on to hold an offense or unforgiveness towards anyone. IF you have accepted God’s gift of salvation, which includes, forgiveness of sins, mercy, grace, His glory, His righteousness; AND you hold an offense, you have forgotten that you had in fact sinned against God.

Be ready because the days are evil

  1. Walk as children of Light- Holiness

John 3:20 “For everyone that practices evil hates the light, neither come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed and reproved. But he that practices truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be plainly shown to be what they are- done with God’s help”

The only way to walk as children of light, is to walk according to the Holy Spirit, we cannot do this on our own.

When I think of walking in light, I think of being exposed, nothing can be kept in the dark. We don’t keep secrets from God or one another, we confess our sins and struggles. Keeping things in the dark gives room for the enemy to have victory over you, and he works overtime in darkness. This makes you a foolish man.

The promotion of fools is SHAME. Do things the Bible way and get Bible results

Romans 8:For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

Let me explain to you a Romans 7 man- this is the portion of Scripture where everyone likes to quote Paul, “For that which I do, I allow not: for what I would, that I do not; but what I hate, that I do”

All of Romans 7 is about an unregenerated man trying to obey God’s precepts and ways, but he cannot. He wants to, but sin still dwells in him and he is powerless to overcome sin. He may endure for a time, but no matter how hard he tries, sin regains control.

The Romans 8 man has power over sin through the Spirit of God. He is an over comer and more than a conqueror.

Romans 13:14 New King James Version (NKJV)

14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.

Make no provision for the flesh- this means that if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. Do not watch movies that cause you to lust.

If you have had any drug or alcohol bondages in your past- stay away from people and places where they are drinking and using drugs.

If you cannot eat just one brownie, do not back a whole pan sitting in your kitchen waiting for you to eat them.

If you have a problem with porn, you don’t get a computer unsupervised. HOW PRECIOUS IS YOUR SALVATION TO YOU??

This is called disciplining your flesh.  Something most of us do not like to do, but it is necessary for success over sin.

Paul said he BEAT his flesh into submission.

1 Corinthians 9:24-27 New King James Version (NKJV)

24 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may [a]obtain it. 25 And everyone who competes for the prize [b]is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown. 26 Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air. 27 But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.

The Apostle Paul said himself that he could be disqualified from the prize (heaven) if he did not fight and submit his flesh to the power of the Spirit. Let that sink in.

God is faithful. He is faithful to keep His Word and His promises and HE has never said anything He didn’t mean and He has never proclaimed any promise that He did not keep. He means what He says and He says what He means. He is faithful to His Word.

Galatians 6:14-17 New King James Version (NKJV)

14 But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by [a]whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. 15 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but a new creation.

16 And as many as walk according to this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israel of God. 17 From now on let no one trouble me, for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus.

Walk according to what rule? “That I am crucified to the world”- I cannot boast in anything I have, or am, or do or rely on anything save my acceptance with God

This is an intense contemplation of a crucified Savior through which I must die to the world.

Have you considered yourself crucified to the world? That is that all things and persons in it are to me as dead things, and therefore as nothing- I am dead to worldly pursuits, cares, desires and enjoyments.

Be ready because the days are evil.
