That One Time Jesus Told Us to Judge Others | Luke 6:43-45

Good trees do not produce bad fruit!

Luke 6:43-45 ESV “For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, (44) for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. (45) The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

  • Today we are going to talk about that one time Jesus told us to judge others.

  • Because make no mistake about it, Jesus is talking about judging others here…
    • It’s not like Jesus was like, mid sermon, going on a horticultural rant…
    • It’s not like Jesus was “He, let me talk about proper tree identification here for a minute, just in case after you are done loving your neighbor you want to go on a nature hike!”
      • NO!
      • Jesus is mid sermon, and he just got done talking about dealing with your own plank before helping your brother with his spec.
    • Then He goes into this example, this metaphor…
      • “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit… each tree is known by it’s fruit.”
    • So to understand what Jesus is talking about here… again it’s all about context… let’s back it up and read this verse in context…

Luke 6:39-43 ESV He also told them a parable: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? (40) A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher. (41) Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? (42) How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye. (43) “For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit,

  • Do you see that “FOR” in verse 43? That means “because”. You see most modern bibles put a big heading in between verse 42 and 43, the ESV put’s a heading there that says “a tree and it’s fruit”
    • But that heading is not scripture, it is there to help break up scripture into easily digestible chunks and to help you find topics in the text… but in reality this sermon was not broken up like that…
    • Jesus was preaching, it’s not like He gave the people a potty break between verses 42 and 43…
  • In fact, verse 43 doesn’t make sense without the previose verses because it starts with “for” or “because”… Jesus is giving the WHY for the WHAT.
    • He is saying “let me explain WHY a blind man can’t lead the blind”
    • “Why a disciple is not above his teacher”
    • “Why you need to deal with your plank before helping with your brothers speck”

Point One – Good Fruit and Bad Fruit

  • So before we go any further in this message we need to define some terms… if we are going to be talking about good fruit and bad fruit, we ought to know what is classified in the Bible as good fruit and what is classified in the Bible as bad fruit.
    • Right, seems simple enough…
  • So let’s talk about bad fruit first, let’s get the icky out of the way…

Galatians 5:19-21 ESV Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, (20) idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, (21) envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

  • Alright, I am going to be a little hard hitting here, because scripture is hard hitting here, if any of this describes you or things you do, please don’t be offended, just hang out until point too… God is not condemning you this morning, He is helping you… alright… here we go…
    • Sexual immorality, impurity, and sensuality is BAD FRUIT.
      • Probably the number one bad fruit that young people in the church deal with today is this one…
        • Now hopefully I don’t hyave to explain to you this morning that sex outside of marriage is sinful, that pre-marital sex is sinful and that sex with someone other than your spouse is sinful…
        • Scripture is SO clear on that, it’s no contest…
        • But this but fruit doesn’t just stop at sexual immorality, least people argue “Well I am not having sex so it’s not a sin…”
        • This list is MUCH more in depth…
          • It includes impurity
          • Men, it’s natural to lust after women, that’s what the world says, but the world is under leadership of the Devil and the Devil is a liar.
            • If you have impure thoughts, especially on a regular basis, you have BAD fruit!

Matthew 5:28 ESV But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

  • So let’s just be real. PORN IS SIN. Period. It is bad fruit. If you are looking at porn, you are in sin.
    • Wives, if your husband want’s to watch porn with you to “get in the mood” let me translate that for you, he is saying “You are not what I desire, so I need to lust after other women before I can be intimate with you”.
  • But it’s not just porn… guy’s if you are breaking your neck when girls walk by in yoga pants, that’s bad fruit! Your lusting after them, that’s impurity!
  • If your mind is undressing women that’s impurity, that’s sin, that’s bad fruit….
  • And women, you are capable of this too, least you think you are above your brothers… all I am saying is I have never seen a dude reading 50 Shades of Grey… but I have seen plenty of woman reading it…
  • Impure thoughts are bad fruit… but it doesn’t stop there… Sensuality is bad fruit!
  • Sensuality! What does that mean… the Greek word here is “akatharsia”.
    • And it means “being sexual” or doing things to insight sexual thought.
      • I am going to step on some toes here… bear with me to point too.
    • We have a word for Akatharsia in American English that I think is better than sensuality… it’s called “being sexy”.
  • If you strive to be sexy you have some bad fruit… if you strive… in the way that you act, in the way that you dress, in the way that you talk, in the way that you dress… if you strive to incite sexual thoughts in others, you are in SIN you have bad fruit.
  • That’s what being sexy is, it means you incite sexual thoughts in others…
    • Now I am not talking about being beautiful, the way God made you, you can be beautiful without being sexy…
    • I was just going through our wedding photos… my wife in that wedding dress was beautiful… she was STUNNING, she was gorgeous…
      • But she wasn’t sexy, she wasn’t trying to show off her butt, her breasts, or her legs…
      • Because those parts of her body weren’t for the wedding guests…
    • Look ladies, I hear you… you want to feel confident, you want to feel beautiful, you want to rock it! You can do that without wearing lingerie in public, ok.
    • Look what Paul says in 1 Corinthians 8:13…

1 Corinthians 8:13 ESV Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble.

  • Paul says If the way I eat makes my brothers stumble then I will never eat meat again!
  • Ladies if the way you dress causes your brother to stumble, change the way you dress… have compassion for men struggling with impure thought…
    • Are they in sin for lusting? Yes, absolutely! But have some compassion on them. It’s bad fruit to dress in that way, to talk in a hyper flirty way, to act in that way… it’s bad fruit.
  • You want to be sexy ladies, great, get married, by some supper hot lingerie, and rock your husband’s world!
  • Moving on…Idolatry is bad fruit…
    • If you put anything above God that is bad fruit… facebook, sports, tv, reading, games, your husband, your wife, your children… if you put them before God it’s idolatry and it’s bad fruit.
  • Sorcery is bad fruit… stay away from anything spiritual that is not from God…
  • Enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, and envy are all bad fruit.
    • The way you interact with people… are you easily angered? That’s bad fruit… love is not easily angered…
    • Do you consider a lot of people your enemy? That’s bad fruit, they may hate you, they may be enemies to you, but you should be the light of salvation to them.
    • Are you a divisive person, an envious person, a gossiper? It’s bad fruit…
    • As Christians we are to unite, not divide, we are to build up, not divide.
  • Finally drunkenness is bad fruit… The Bible doesn’t say it’s a sin to drink… but it is CLEARLY a sin to be drunk, if you get drunk to have a good time… that’s bad fruit…
  • In short, SIN is bad fruit…So then, what’s the good fruit?

Galatians 5:22-23 ESV But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, (23) gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

  • Here is what good trees produce!
    • Love: The love of God… go read 1st Corinthians chapter 13 for a robust definition of Love.
    • Joy, not happiness, but joy… a wellspring of Joy that is only found in Christ and has nothing to do with circumstance.
    • Peace that surpasses all understanding… our peace as Christians should confuse people… how can you be at peace in a time such as this? “Because Jesus, that’s how”
    • Patience, kindness, goodness… Those should be words that describe us as Christians.
    • Faithfulness, our yes should be yes and our no should be no.
    • And don’t forget Self control! Christians never get the excuse “I can’t help it” because self-control should define us!
  • Alright, so we have good fruit and bad fruit defined… what do we do about it? Remember the last point of last weeks sermon? Judge yourself so you can better help others?
    • Right after Jesus goes through the speck example “Take the log out of your own eye to help your brother with the speck in his”… right after that he says “Because a tree is known by it’s fruit…”
    • Therefore, we ought to prune our own trees!

Point Two – Prune Your Own Tree

Luke 6:43 ESV “For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit,

  • So what… if I have bad fruit in my life does that mean I am not a Christian?
    • NO! If you have been born again, if you have confessed Jesus Christ as Lord, if you believe in His resurrection, if you have repented and turned to Him… you are saved!
    • Good fruit will start growing…
    • BUT SOMETIMES BAD FRUIT IS STUBURN…. Sometimes bad fruit from our past life sticks around doesn’t it?
      • So what then should you do? Prune your tree!
      • Those verses in Galatians about good fruit and bad conclude with verse 24

Galatians 5:24 ESV And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

  • We as Christians we crucify the flesh, in other words we prune our bad fruit off.
    • Anyone who grows fruit trees will tell you that pruning is very important, because the branches that are producing bad fruit sap the energy from the tree, robbing nutrients and growth to the good branches…

Show title slide again

  • Look at this tree, if you look at first glance there is some nasty fruit… but if you look closer you will see there is actually good fruit on this tree, this is a GOOD tree, but it’s got some bad fruit.
    • So the Orchardist will see this, and simply cut off the bad branch so the branches with good fruit can thrive.
  • If you have bad fruit, just like we talked about last week, judge yourself.
    • What bad fruit in your life is there that needs to be cut off?
    • Don’t condemn yourself, instead recognize the branch with the bad fruit, cut it off, so that your good fruit can thrive!
  • If your not married and you are having sex… stop. Just stop, it’s not love, it’s sin.
  • If you are struggling with porn or lust, you have to get free…
    • Seriously men, talk to me if you struggle and want to be free…
      • That was the darkest, nastiest, maggot filled fruit in my Christian life for almost 15 years, and it feels so good to have cut that off and be free, I can help you! Please reach out!
    • If you struggle with anger, or divisiveness, or strife… cut it off, look at your life, are there people that bring that out of you, friends who encourage you to gossip or are always tearing others down, cut them out of your life. Do some pruning.
    • Whatever your bad fruit, the simple answer is CUT IT OFF.

Next week we are going to talk about how Jesus was telling us to Judge other’s in a righteous way… but for now I feel like we just need some time to prune, Amen…

Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
