Just Do What He Says | Luke 9:10-17

YouTube video sermon

If He says, go, then go; if He says stay, then stay. Just do what He says!

Introduction

Luke 9:10-17 ESV  On their return the apostles told him all that they had done. And he took them and withdrew apart to a town called Bethsaida.  (11)  When the crowds learned it, they followed him, and he welcomed them and spoke to them of the kingdom of God and cured those who had need of healing.  (12)  Now the day began to wear away, and the twelve came and said to him, “Send the crowd away to go into the surrounding villages and countryside to find lodging and get provisions, for we are here in a desolate place.”  (13)  But he said to them, “You give them something to eat.” They said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish—unless we are to go and buy food for all these people.”  (14)  For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.”  (15)  And they did so, and had them all sit down.  (16)  And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing over them. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd.  (17)  And they all ate and were satisfied. And what was left over was picked up, twelve baskets of broken pieces.

  • When I was on my summer break after my sophomore year of college I lived with a group of men and we all had a passion for evangelism. Just a fire in our bellies to preach the gospel to as many people as possible.
    • And we found out one morning, like last minute, that there was going to be a huge Hispanic pride parade in downtown Seattle. We knew we had to go… anywhere there was a lot of people was a place we wanted to go to share the Gospel.
    • Now, I don’t speak Spanish… I like to think I do, but anyone who actually speaks Spanish will tell you that I absolutely can not…
    • One of the guy’s we go with does speak Spanish, but that left three of us who were going to this parade without much to do… but what we did have was a small bag of Spanish gospel tracks… they looked like this, only in Spanish.
    • In our little box we had maybe 5 packs of these. So I got two, another guy got two, and another guy got one. We figured we would hand them out and go home.
    • Now historically at these kinds of events there is an attendance of between 100 and 300 thousand… So we figured we would be there for less than an hour… we would hand these out and go home.
    • We get there and it is just packed, I take my two stacks of Spanish Million Dollar Bill tracts and post up somewhere.
    • I hand one to a kid and he says “Gratis?” which means “free?” and I say “Si, si, Gratis!”. As soon as I say that, a grown man standing next to him says “Gratis?” and I hand him a bill.
    • Two seconds latter I am surrounded by a mob of people… it was CRAZY! I had to hold the bills above my head and hand them out like this…
    • I did that for an hour an a half… nonstop handing out bills. I must have given out more than 4,000 bills… I am serious… no exaggeration… yet I never even used my second stack of bills.
    • Y’all, there is only 100 bills per stack!
    • But you know what we prayed when we saw all those people? We prayed “Jesus give us a loaves and fish miracle” and you know what He did? He gave us a loaves and fish miracles!
    • Because our job is NOT to provide what is needed, our Job is to OBEY! God will take care of what needs to be taken care of amen!
  • If you take one thing away from this message this morning it is this “JUST DO WHAT HE SAYS”, that’s it. JUST DO WHAT HE SAYS, Jesus will take care of it!
  • Y’all He created the universe in a moment with just a word! And you are worried you don’t have enough food?! COME ON!
  • You have faith to believe that Jesus can die and rise again conquering sin and death… but you don’t have faith that he can provide for the ministry He has called you to?
  • JUST DO WHAT HE SAYS. If He says “go” then go! If he says “stay” then stay! Just do what He says, he will provide for you. JUST DO WHAT HE SAYS!
  • Guess what the title of today’s sermon is…?
  • SHOW TITLE SLIDE
  • PRAY PRAY PRAY PRAY PRAY PRAY
  • Now listen, church, I have two points this morning… and this is one of those sermons that you have to hear, understand, and apply BOTH points for it to work… don’t just listen to point one, if you do you are going to have a bad time!
  • Don’t just listen to point two… if you do you are going to have a bad time…
  • LISTEN TO AN APPLY BOTH POINTS… ok, you with me?
  • Then let’s get into it.

Point One – It Might Not Make Sense, Just Do What He Says!

Luke 9:13-14 ESV  But he said to them, “You give them something to eat.” They said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish—unless we are to go and buy food for all these people.”  (14)  For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.”

  • Think about this… there are 5,000 people and Jesus says “Feed them”.
    • Now if I was talking to the disciples I would say “JUST DO WHAT HE SAYS”.
    • But the disciples are human, and understandably they are confused….
      • There’s… there’s like 5000 people Jesus… we don’t have that much food… we have 5 loaves and two fish… that’s enough for like a couple people to share… but there are FIVE THOUSAND PEOPLE out here Jesus…
      • I mean we can go down to Little Ceaser’s and see what they have hot and ready… but I don’t know Jesus… we should probably just send them home to eat.
    • Jesus says separate them into 100 groups of 50 people each…
      • Ok… but… I mean… Did you hear the part about 5 loaves and 2 fish?
    • What Jesus is asking them doesn’t make sense.
      • Why groups of 50?
      • Why not groups of 10, or 5, why not have them line up in a massive single file line?
      • I DON’T KNOW! Here is what I do know Isaiah 55:8-9

Isaiah 55:8-9 ESV  For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD.  (9)  For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

  • What does this mean? It’s means that God’s ways don’t make sense to us… because compared to God we stupid, y’all!
  • Think about the Bible and that doesn’t make sense…
    • God tells the Israelite slaves to put lambs blood over their door in Egypt…
      • God tells Abraham to sacrifice his only son on a mountain…
        • That wouldn’t have made ANY sense to Abraham… there are so many other way’s God could have tested his faithfulness!
        • But Abraham didn’t know a ram would be provided… a substation sacrifice… like we today have a substitution to our sin…
        • And Abraham didn’t know that nearly two thousand years later God would sacrifice HIS only begotten Son… and that in all reality Abraham was asked to prophetically act out the gospel that hasn’t even happened yet!
          • Of course He wouldn’t have known that… because Abraham is not God, and God’s ways are higher than our ways and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts!
        • Ewww! That doesn’t make any sense God, you know who is Israli and not in Egypt, why you got to bring lamb blood into it?
          • It wouldn’t have made sense to the Isralites!
          • But then again, they didn’t know that a thousand year later God would send us a pure and Spotless lamb, Jesus Christ, to shed his blood for us to save us… and that the act they were doing in spreading that lambs blood to save them was actually prophetic!
            • Of course they didn’t know that, because they are not God and His ways are higher!
          • The Israelites marching into the promised land were meet with a fortified walled city called Jericho.
            • God tells them to march around the wall for 7 days then on the 7th day march around it 7 times then blow their trumpets and shout!
            • What?! That doesn’t make sense! Why not just send fire and brimstone down from heaven?
            • Here is what they didn’t know… they didn’t know that 7 was the number of completion… and that the act of walking around the wall was prophetic.
            • They didn’t know that a savior was coming not just once, but that He would return a second time also…

1 Thessalonians 4:16 NKJV  For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.

  • You see there is a promised land coming, a New Jerusalem. Satan has fortified this world with sin and filthy evil…
  • But Jesus, when everything is complete, is coming back with a SHOUT and a TRUMPET to take back the promised land from the enemy for His people!
    • The Israelites were prophetically proclaiming the return of Christ!
      • Of course they had no idea, of course it didn’t make sense… because they are human! There ways are not His ways, His ways and His thoughts are higher!
    • Listen church. God is going to ask you to do weird stuff… of course He is.
      • THE BIBLE IS FULL OF WEIRD!
      • Therefore if God is asking you to do something weird, then He is asking you to do something BIBLICAL!
        • If your definition of “Biblical” or of “Christianity” is a safe definition… if you feel something can’t be Christian or Biblical or Godly if it is weird, odd, strange, or uncomfortable… then you must not think the Bible is biblical, Christian, or Godly… because it is CHOK full of weird, odd, strange, and uncomfortable.
      • On the Contrary, our Job as Christians is NEVER to ask WHY? But to simply say “Yes Lord”.
        • Every parent can tell you that one of the most frustrating things a kid can ask you is “WHY?
          • “Ezra Don’t touch the fire” “why?”
          • “Hanna you can’t have any more cookies!” “Why?!”
          • “No, Ezra, you can’t drive daddy’s car!” “Why?!”
          • “Ezra get out of the street RIGHT NOW!” “Why?!” “DON’T ASK WHY, JUST DO IT! YOU ARE ABOUT TO GET HIT BY A CAR!”
            • Ok, that last one has never happened, praise God, but it illustrates the danger and stupidity of asking “why?”!
          • Not that it is wrong to be curious. But it is wrong to delay your obedience based on inquisition.
            • Let me say that again: It is not wrong to be curious. But it is wrong to delay your obedience based on inquisition.
            • Delayed obedience is the same thing as disobedience church.
          • Now I don’t have a problem with Ezra asking why after he obeys. “Hey dad, why did you ask me to get out of the street”… “well let me tell you about what happens when little boys get squashed by big trucks”
          • There is nothing wrong with being curious… but OBEY first!
            • Because honestly church, my ways are higher than Ezra’s ways, and my thoughts are higher than his thoughts…
          • And so is my Heavenly Fathers ways and thoughts higher than mine, and your Heavenly Father’s ways higher than yours.
        • So when God speaks, church… JUST DO WHAT HE SAYS.
      • The LAST thing I wanted to do was work with Victory Family Centre to open a church in Iowa… My wife didn’t either. It didn’t make sense… there are so many churches here… why not plant a church in Seattle, a very under churched area.
        • But we didn’t question when God said go! We just said ok.
          • I didn’t know that there was a guy named Kris who would need a place to stay as he got his life on track.
          • I didn’t know there was a family with 3 boys and a funny last name who needed a church family and who’s son’s would one day call my son brother.
          • I didn’t know there was a bank teller with adult braces who needed to know Jesus as savior.
          • I didn’t know there was a retired air-force family who needed a church that actually felt like family,
          • Or a woman who needed a church to war alongside her for her husband’s immigration visa.
          • Or a church in Seirra Leonne for that matter that would need funds from a church in Iowa to build a building.
          • I didn’t even know human trafficking was a thing… let alone that I would be launched into ministry combating.
        • Of course I didn’t know these things… because I AM NOT GOD!
      • God spoke to us and we just did what He said!
      • Just do what He says church!
        • And if you don’t hear God speak then take this sermon and treasure it your heart until the moment you do hear Him speak… and in the meantime read your Bible at every chance you can and HE WILL START SPEAKING to you. BECAUSE HE SPEAKS TO HIS CHILDREN.
      • And if, by chance, you are not a child of God this morning, you are not saved, then you will have a chance this afternoon to be born again and start hearing God speak into your life.

Point Two – Jesus is Not Unreasonable, Just Do What He Says!

  • Point two this morning, Jesus is Not Unreasonable, Just Do What He says!

Luke 9:12-13a ESV  Now the day began to wear away, and the twelve came and said to him, “Send the crowd away to go into the surrounding villages and countryside to find lodging and get provisions, for we are here in a desolate place.”  (13a)  But he said to them, “You give them something to eat.”

  • Jesus didn’t ask the disciples to feed the with the bread in fish for no reason, there was a reason… the people were hungry.
    • It didn’t make sense… because there wasn’t enough food… but at least there was a reason!
      • It wasn’t without reason, it wasn’t unreasonable…
        • Especially knowing what we know now that Jesus was going to multiply the loaves and the fish.
      • Jesus is not unreasonable, just do what He says!
        • You got to get this point church, you have to get this point… because if you get the first point but you don’t get this point you are in danger of following the wrong voices.
          • There are many voices vying for your attention… there is the enemy and his minions, there is your flesh, there is your heart which is deceitfully wicked, there is our culture and our media which is decidedly anti-Christian…
          • There is only ONE voice that we should listen to, Jesus, and Jesus is NEVER unreasonable.
        • Was it unreasonable for God to ask the Israelites to march around Jericho?
          • No, God had brought them that far, had He not?
          • He had promised the land, had He not?
          • There was a barrier to God’s promise, so God proposed a way to remove the barrier.
          • THERE WAS A REASON GOD TOLD THEM TO MARCH AROUND THE WALLS! SO THAT THE WALLS WOULD FALL!
        • Was it unreasonable for God to ask the Israelites to slaughter the lamb and cover their door posts?
          • Well, they were slaves and God wanted them to be free… that’s a pretty good reason.
          • And He had already done 11 crazy plagues before that… so it’s not like the people were unused to plagues…
          • It was reasonable… it was a reasonable escalation of what God was already doing.
        • What about the hardest example… God tells Abraham to sacrifice his son… SURELY THAT MUST BE UNREASONABLE! I MEAN HUMAN SACRAFICE IS DETESTABLE TO GOD! HIS WORD EVEN SAYS SO! But… if we look at Hebrews chapter 11 we discover something AMAZING about the faith of Abraham… it was reasonable…

Hebrews 11:17-19 NIV  By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son,  (18)  even though God had said to him, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.”  (19)  Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead, and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death.

  • Abraham REASONED! God promised my offspring would be through Isaac, God doesn’t lie or break promises, and God is capable of raising Isaac from the dead… therefore even if I kill Isaac God will rise him again to keep His promises.
    • Now that is a CRAZY level of faith, but it is not unreasonable faith.
  • When God called Amanda and I to move to Singapore to church plant in Iowa… He told us both privately and clearly.
    • I remember the conversation clear as day… we were driving to BJ’s, a big restaurant in the mall, to meet with Pastor Ong to discuss the possibility.
    • Now Amanda and I had talked about it before, and neither of us wanted to do it…
    • BUT GOD TOLD US BOTH PRIVATLY TO SAY YES! TO GO!
    • So we are driving to BJ’s and I say “I think God is saying that we should go”… and Amanda turns to me and says “THAT’S WHAT GOD IS TELL ME TOO!”.
      • It would have been unreasonable for God to tell me something then tell my wife something different… if that happened we would know it was not God speaking.
    • But as it was, He told us both. So we did it…
      • We Just did what Jesus said.
      • And that one decision, in that car ride, for us to just do what Jesus said… is responsible for this church, this church family, the bonds built here, the salvations, the baptisms, the discipleship, the growth… and I am sure infinitly more things that I don’t even see… but God does… and His ways are higher than our ways, amen…
    • Just do what Jesus Says

Conclusion – Invite band up

  • In conclusion… let’s do some ministry, Amen?
  • I believe that disobeying God… meaning God ask you to do something and you say “No”… I believe that is sinful, amen?
  • I also believe that delayed obedience… meaning God asks you to so something and you say “Maybe latter” or “Yes, but not now” or “Can you tell me why first?”… I believe delayed obedience like that is sinful as well. Amen… y’all agree with that?
    • It’s a hard thing to agree with, for sure, but a perfect God has perfect expectations church…
  • Therefore I believe that there may be some people in here who have sinned in this area… let’s just call a spade a spade, today, no sugar coating…
  • And what do we do when we have sin… very simple… we just confess it and pray… and be done with it…
    • There is a lot of shame in sin, church, but there NO shame in repenteance! And there is no condemnation in Christ… I am certainly not here to throw stones…
    • But I am here to help Jesus break some chains amen…

James 5:16 ESV  Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.

  • Alter call for confession…
    • (If no one confesses inform church of upcoming time of testing)
  • Alter call for those who have never or not currently hearing from God (Just raise of Hands)
  • Alter call for salvation.
