Introduction

Luke 7:18-23 ESV The disciples of John reported all these things to him. And John, (19) calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?” (20) And when the men had come to him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?'” (21) In that hour he healed many people of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and on many who were blind he bestowed sight. (22) And he answered them, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them. (23) And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.”

  • Let’s talk about what happened here…
    • If you remember, John the Baptist was sent to prison because he rebuked Herod, a governor of the land, for sleeping with his own sister in law.
    • So John is in Prison, and spoiler alert, Herod is about to have him beheaded, but non-the-less John is in prison awaiting his fate… so he sends his two disciples to go ask Jesus “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?”…
    • Basically John’s disciples are asking Jesus “Are you the Messiah”
    • Jesus responds to this by, in that very moment, healing many diseases, casting out demons, and healing many blind people… then Jesus says “See all that I have just done, go tell John and ask him “What do you think bro?”
    • Jesus concludes with this powerful statement “Blessed is the one who is not offended by Me”

  • Today’s message centers around that last line by Jesus… “Blessed are those who are not Offended by Jesus”… Y’all want to be blessed? Then don’t be offended by Jesus!

Point One – Pay Attention

Luke 7:20-21 ESV And when the men had come to him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?'” (21) In that hour he healed many people of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and on many who were blind he bestowed sight.

  • If you are a part of this church family, if you are a Christian and you have the Holy Spirit inside of you…. If you have been born again and you HAVE not been constantly witnessing the miracles of God… then you have not been paying attention.
  • If you are angry at God, frustrated by your situation, offended by the way you preserve Jesus to be treating you… then you have not been paying attention…
    • Point one is so simple… pay attention. Pay attention to what God is doing for you, always.
    • Be sensitive to His Spirit…
    • Pay attention to what Jesus is doing for other believers around you…
    • Pay attention the the promises of God and watch as He fulfills them.
    • PAY ATTENTION Y’ALL!
  • John’s Disciples came and asked Jesus “Are you the Messiah” and Jesus said “Watch!”
    • If John’s disciples zoned out and didn’t pay attention, if the just daydreamed while Christ preformed all these miracles… what then would they tell John…
      • Just imagine, the disciples come back and John says “Well, what did Jesus say? Is He the Messiah?”
      • And the disciples respond “He said to tell you all He did”
      • “Well what did He do?”
      • “I don’t know, He just walked away and started talking to other people… I am not really sure, I was kind of spacing out…”
    • Now that is a silly example, for sure, how could two men stand in the presence of Christ who is doing ALL OF THESE MIRACLES and they NOT pay attention…
      • I am telling you church, as silly as it sounds, it happens ALL the time… right here in this church, right here in our lives, and in every church that has ever existed… God moves mountains, and there are some people on the back not paying attention at all…
    • Pay attention, church, don’t miss what God is doing…
    • Because likely, when you are offended by Christ you are not thinking about the miracles He has done for you and others, you are not thinking about the promises fulfilled… likely you are thinking about the situation you are currently in… you are forgetting about all that God has done…
      • Look at Job! He lost his children, his servants, all of his wealth and propert … and here is what Job says:

Job 1:21 ESV And he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.”

  • The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away, blessed be the name of the LORD!
    • How can I complain that God took away my family, and my wealth, and everything I have… when it is GOD who gave those things to me…
  • You see, Job payed attention, he watched as God poured out blessing after blessing, big and small, and when tragedy struck, Job remembered all that God had done.
  • Job was not offended by Jesus… and yes Job knew who Jesus was even though it was thousands of years before his birth! How do I know this, because throughout all this tragedy Job exclaims

Job 19:25 ESV For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth.

  • Pay attention, and you too will know that your Redeemer lives even in the hardest, darkest parts of your life.
  • David, who had some really hard and dark times in his life, said this about paying attention, my favorite psalm, psalm 103:

Psalms 103:1-5 ESV Of David. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! (2) Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, (3) who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, (4) who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, (5) who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

Point Two – Go and tell what you have seen and heard

Luke 7:22 ESV And he answered them, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them.

  • If you are paying attention, if you are really paying attention, you are going to see some mighty, mighty things that Jesus does… you are going to see miracles, amen‽
    • When is the last time you told someone about those miracles? When is the last time you talked about it to someone, not for conversation sake, but to give God the glory, to prove that Christ is the Messiah?

Psalms 71:15-18 ESV My mouth will tell of your righteous acts, of your deeds of salvation all the day, for their number is past my knowledge. (16) With the mighty deeds of the Lord GOD I will come; I will remind them of your righteousness, yours alone. (17) O God, from my youth you have taught me, and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds. (18) So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come.

  • Are we proclaiming God’s might to the next generation? Are we reminding people of God’s righteousness? Are we telling of God’s deeds of salvation all the day long?
    • See it doesn’t help to pay attention if you don’t act on that, it might help you get through hard times, praise Jesus, but Christianity Ain’t about you!
    • The great commission is not “Be a great Christian until you die, and try your best to stop sinning”.
      • No, the great commission is “Go and make disciples”.
      • Should we be growing as Christians? Absolutely! Should we stop sinning? You better believe it… But that’s not our job, our job is to MAKE DISCIPLES.
    • Well one of the most powerful ways is about testifying about what Jesus has done…
  • You see, John is about to die at the hands of Herod, and as such John’s disciples will have to continue the work…
    • I think John sent these disciples to Jesus so they could see first hand that He is the messiah, so they could see first hand the miracles of Christ…
    • So that they can go into the world and tell everyone what they have witnessed themselves… there is power in your testimony, y’all!

Revelation 12:11 ESV And they have conquered [Satan] by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death.

  • In the end times, when Satan is given even more power, when wickedness reigns, when Christians all over the world are being killed left and right (there are already places like this, mind you), it is YOUR testimony that will defeat the enemy!
    • If an atheist challenged, you “What has Christ ever done for you”?
      • What would you say?

1 Peter 3:15 ESV but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,

  • This is a real practical challenge for you… what would you say? Are you prepared to give an answer? If not, don’t let the sun go down tonight before you figure it out… right it down if you must…
    • Let me tell you what my God has done for me…
      • He Saved me, redeemed me, He changed me.
      • He gave me my job… He has always provided for me.
      • Out of no-where he gave my husband a visa when it looked like he would never get one…
      • I put in an offer on a home, the accepted without countering… then he helped me sell my house in a single day.
      • He healed my granddad of cancer…
      • He introduced me to my wife….
      • He healed my back pain…
      • He confused the doctors…
      • He gave me a baby even though the doctors weren’t sure I could have one…
    • These are all real testimonies from OUR CHURCH.
    • What would you say? What would be your defense?
  • When is the last time you told someone about this? We will overcome!

1 Peter 3:15 ESV but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,

  • Look at that last verse there “yet do it with gentleness and respect”… that brings us nicely to our final point…

Point Three – Jesus is offensive, blessed are those who are not offended

Luke 7:23 ESV And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.”

  • Jesus is offensive y’all.
    • Jesus says crazy stuff like “If you look at a woman with lust you have committed adultery in your heart against your wife…”
    • He says “If you hate without cause, you have murdered in your heart”
    • Jesus talks more about hell then he does heaven, y’all, the dude is offensive… He was so offensive that the KILLED HIM!
      • The dude is offensive…
    • So what do we do with that… we don’t want to offend people right?
      • We should be conscience of that, we shouldn’t want to be offensive… we should want to be at peace with all people as much as possible…
    • But the great commission is not “Go and don’t offend people” it is “Go and make disciples”…
    • My driving motive in life is that I want God to be honored and I want people to go to heaven…
      • Neither of those things can happen without people being offended sometimes…
    • We have all heard the old adage “There are two things you don’t talk about, religion and politics…”
      • What nonsense! Of course I am going to talk about Religion… because I don’t want people to go to hell!

2 Timothy 1:8 ESV Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God,

  • Some people care more about who is the spokesman for Nike then they care about the gospel of Christ…
    • News flash y’all, Nike is a horribly ungodly company. They send tons of money to Planned Parenthood and they spend millions supporting the LGBTQ agenda… that’s been going on for years…
    • Yet some has been football player becomes the spokesman and all the sudden people are burning shoes…
  • But you know what, you won’t see posts about Nike on my facebook… you won’t see me burning shoes… why?
    • Because some people relate with what Colin Kaepernick stands for… or kneels for I should say…
      • And I don’t want to offend them with my political views… especially over something as shallow as a for profit shoe company…
    • And I don’t talk about it because a lot of people are offended by Kaepernick kneeling and feel like he is disrespecting our nation and our servicemen…
      • And I don’t want to offend them either…
      • There are people on both sides of every hot button political issue that are passionate… and there are people on both sides that are going to hell unless they find their Savior…
        • So instead of being offensive over my views of football and shoes…
        • I chose to share the gospel…
      • And that WILL offend some people, there will be many offended by the Gospel it is true…
        • But there will be some who are not offended…
        • AND OH HOW BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO ARE NOT OFFENDED, FOR THEY WILL FIND THE KINGDOM OF GOD, THEY WILL FIND SALVATION.
      • And for the sake of those who will not be offended, I am willing to be offensive to all others for Christ’s sake…
      • So I live my life in a way were I try to be unoffensive in all ways, except for one, Christ Jesus and Him Crucified…

Conclusion

  • Invite Worship team up.
  • In conclusion y’all,
    • Pay attention!
    • Tell the world what Christ has done!
    • Be unoffensive in all ways, except for your testimony and the gospel of Christ.
    • BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO ARE NOT OFFENDED BY CHRIST!
